About the Author

Steve Light is a teacher and storyteller. He lives in New York City.

More About the Author

Steve Light grew up in an enchanted place known as New Jersey. He went on to study Illustration at Pratt Institute, he also had the pleasure of studying and mentoring under Dave Passalacqua. Upon graduating he did some corporate illustrations for companies such as: AT&T, Sony Films, Absolut Vodka and the New York Times Book Review. Steve Light then went on to design buttons that were acquired by the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum.

Then came a great opportunity for Steve to teach art to small children. Through his experiences as a teacher he found his true calling as a children's illustrator and storyteller. He has been teaching in the classroom for over 10 years with children 3-6 years old. He has used this experience to help him publish 8 children's books by Abrams, Candlewick Press and Chronicle Books. Steve's books include: I am Happy a touch and feel book, Puss in Boots, The Shoemaker Extraordinaire, Uncle Sam a press out and play book, and 2 Hello Kitty books that he engineered. The Shoemaker Extraordinaire was in the children's book show at the Society of Illustrators. The Shoemaker Extraordinaire even led to Steve being asked to design an ad for United Airlines that was advertised in Japan. Steve's newest books are Trucks Go by Chronicle books in stores now and The Christmas Giant published by Candlewick Press in stores 2010.

Steve Light's storytelling to small children inspired him to create storyboxes for some classic stories. These storyboxes consist of wooden figures that he has hand-carved and uses to dramatize the story. By being in the classroom and sharing stories with children this way, he has seen its effect on their young imaginations. Steve Light often observes children acting out his stories and creating their own "books" as well as creating their own props and characters. Steve Light's storyboxes give the tales that children already love a new dimension. He also creates sculptures that are inspired by popular folk and fairy tales. Steve Light has had the opportunity to share his storyboxes with children in numerous schools, museums, libraries and events. The storyboxes have led Steve to create a TV show pilot "Storytime with Steve Light". Steve's greatest joy is being able to share stories with children and introducing them to new worlds that they can only visit with their imaginations. Steve's website is www.stevelightart.com

Trains Go is a great book for toddlers, most especially young train lovers. All of the great train sounds (Whooosh, Ding-Ding, Toot-Toot) are here and coupled with energetic, colorful illustrations depicting different kinds of trains. From speed trains to steam engines, each train dashes across a two page spread while the reader gets to make the accompanying sound effects. The book is a strange size - it's long and thin shape adds to the feeling of motion you get when you see the trains chugging down the tracks. It's big enough to use with a group, and I would certainly encourage you to do so. When I shared this with a group of one to two year olds today, I think I had just as much fun reading it as they did listening. I know that I had everyone's attention from the first page, and that is a rare thing! Kids will love to hear this one over and over again, just as long as the reader takes the opportunity to explore all the great sounds to their fullest potential. The sturdy board pages guarantee that this book will withstand lots of repeat readings. It's too much fun to be missed and is going in my permanent story time collection right alongside Donald Crews' Freight Train.

We bought this for our 20 month old toddler, along with a train set, for Christmas. He loves this book! It's very simple and focuses on the sounds each train make, not much real vocabulary, which is fine because he has many other books for that purpose. It's just overall a lot of fun! He especially enjoys the speed train going "Whoooooooooshhhhh!". His friends who come over love this book, too!

We take care of our precious grandson during the week. We have been reading to him since he was two months old. He has enjoyed it from the start. I'm always on the lookout for a durable, well-illustrated, interesting book. I read the reviews on Trains Go and thought it might be a good addition to our library. Excellent choice!!! He is 7 mo & LOVES this book. When you are reading to him he turns to look at you when you make the sounds. The look of delight on his face is priceless. The book measures about 12" wide by 6" high. Each page as a colorful illustration of a type of train and the sound it makes. This is the time to really let your inner vocal talents out. When that "zoooooooooshshshshshshshsh" sound appears on the page in smaller, then gradually bigger, then gradually smaller letters, give it all the softness and loudness and length it deserves. Your listener will reward your effort with an irresistible smile time after time. Then....read it again!

Even my 4 mo old LOVES this book. The illustrations are bold and graphic, and it gets me and dad trying to sound as train-like as possible. Very fun!

For a grandson who is a Thomas the train fan, this was a much loved addition about trains. BIG BOOK showing trains. For the younger set 2-3 year olds as not much to be read. More like a picture book.

No plot. Just pictures of trains and the noises they make. "It's short enough that reading it ten times in a row (because they kept asking) is still good. Plus, when I didn't want to read it an eleventh time, the six-year-old read it to the two-year-old, complete with my gestures and inflections. Not since "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See" has a book been so popular with the children I love.

My 2 yo loves saying all the train sounds. Short enough and fun enough to maintain his attention. He requests this book every night.
