Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"Traits of Writing:  The Complete Guide for Middle School is a tall drink of cool water for a pedagogically thirsty decade...  There's enough here to create, maintain, and renew a highly effective middle school writing program for years.  This is a mentor text for today's generation of teachers and those to come.  I can't imagine a more helpful and inspired book."
--Rick Wormeli, columnist for NSMA's Middle Ground and author of Meet Me in the Middle:  Becoming an Accomplished Middle-Level Teacher
"With this book, Ruth Culham demonstrates again her true understanding of learners and how to teach them to write.  She brings the same quality and direction to middle school that she has already brought to the elementary grades.  Our students have seen the benefits of her efforts.  She has given us the tools we need to make a lasting difference in their education."
--Paul Kinder, Superintendent of Schools, Blue Springs School District, Blue Springs, Missouri

More About the Author

RUTH CULHAM, Ed.D., is the president of the Culham Writing Company and former Unit Manager of the Assessment Program at Education Northwest in Portland, Oregon. Ruth was English Teacher of the Year in Montana, the highlight of her 19-year teaching career. She holds specialty degrees in Library Science and Elementary, Middle, and Secondary English Education.

Ruth is the recognized expert in the traits of writing field and author of over 40 teaching resources published by Scholastic, including 6+1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide, Grades 3 and Up; 6+1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for the Primary Grades; and Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School, winner of the 2011 Teacher's Choice award. (Not surprising, however, since middle school is her true love.) She has a new book for principals, What Principals Need to Know About Teaching and Learning Writing (2014), and another exciting new blockbuster text from IRA: The Writing Thief: Using Mentor Texts to Teach the Craft of Writing (2014).

As the author of Traits Writing: The Complete Writing Program for Grades K-8 (2012), she has launched a writing revolution. Traits Writing is the culmination of 40 years of educational experience, research, practice, and passion. There's always more-in her heart and on her mind. Her connections to teachers and students keep the work fresh. Her home office keeps her comfortable. Her friends keep her in wine. Her cats keep her company. Life is pretty good.

Teachers, if you are wondering how to spend your Christmas gift cards, stop now and get this book! I loved Ruth Culham's previous book on the traits, but Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School surpasses its predecessor in both content and usefulness. Ruth summarizes current research on writing, explains and illustrates each trait, provides numerous student samples and lesson ideas, and lists mentor texts for each trait. But she doesn't stop there! She includes a CD filled with mode-specific strategies, lessons, and student-friendly scoring guides, all ready to use. All of it is written in Ruth's warm, witty style, which makes this book fun to use.

With this one book, Ruth is saving me hours of time--time I previously spent typing sample papers, time creating lessons and warm-ups, time reformatting lessons for my Smart Board. With the CD included, Ruth is giving us the equivalent of three or four books--what a deal! Our district purchased a book for every communication arts teacher; it's really that good.

Take some time to preview this book. You will be glad you did.

Thank you, Ruth Culham! Recognizing the dearth of materials for the upper grades, she's actually done something about it. The scored student papers are already proving invaluable, and the cd that's included is full of more papers, and scoring guides (yes!) that are easy for printing or just viewing. I've waited years for a book like this, and all I can say is it has surpassed my expectations. A must-have for all middle-school teachers!

I have been teaching 6th grade for 5 years and I was ecstatic when Ruth Culhams's Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School (Theory and Practice) was released last year. My earlier elementary versions were dog-eared and manipulated to apply to my middle school writing environment. With this new release I have found it to be extremely targeted and well designed for grades 6,7,8. My students love to read and score the included writing samples, and the warm-up exercises are very age appropriate and are great writing starters for young teenagers. I would highly recommend Ruth Culham's Middle School Trait book as well all of her supplemental publications...NO SCHOOL DISTRICT SHOULD BE WITHOUT THIS WRITING SERIES!

Ruth Culham has again written a book that revolutionized the way writing is taught in schools.

Now with her new Middle School release specifcally for grades 6 through 8, this thoughtful, entertaining book will help your students become better writers than they ever thought they could be.

With scored sample papers and brand new scoring guides, this wonderful book will help not only you as a teacher, but also help your students 'get it' when it comes to writing.

It even comes with a handy CD so you can print forms off of it.

Buy this book! No disappointments.

Teachers, I have taught middle school for 22 years now, this book is a 'must-have' and refreshing to my old school ways! I have valued Ruth Culham's previous books/workbooks on the traits, and this addition surpasses my expectations by far! Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School makes my job much easier and enjoyable knowing I have a realistic tool to provide numerous student samples and lesson ideas. The CD Ms. Culham adds makes this a 'gem'. In the world of proficiencies, grades, scoring, and teaching...Ruth keeps the wonder and creativity included which makes my rating of this book right up there at the top. I wish our school district would fund a staff development day to hear her speak and help more of us join in the fun of writing, and teaching students to love writing!

Although I have read Culham's previous books and have had experience with the "traits" before, I found this particular edition to be a wonderful resource. The difference is that it is geared towards the 6, 7, and 8th grade population. As any middle school teacher knows, finding resources that address the unique needs of "those in the middle" can be challenging. This book provides tons of writing models that you can use right out of the book or adapt to create your own depending on the needs and level of your class. Additionally, there is a CD packed with writing models, rubrics and support materials. I teach in a school that offers little flexibility and I have found ways to sneak in these superb writing strategies and still adhere to my school's rigid curriculum.

As a homeschool mom, I am always on the look out for materials to help me teach my kids. I have to admit I was completely scared and overwhelmed about teaching my 6th grader writing skills until I purchased and started reading this book. Ruth Culham breaks down teaching writing skills in such an understandable way. The student writing samples that goes with each scoring guides makes it extremely clear what writing skills to look for in my middle school writer. I love that is not the usually kill and drill sort of method for teaching writing skills. Writing isn't going to be a dreaded subject in this house whole. This book provides a great deal wonderful assignments for teaching different writing traits. Some wonderful student book have been suggestion to reinforce the Writing Traits that are being taught. This book has enough material that it will be use for all 3 years of middle school writing instruction for my middle school daughter.
