Here are some of the problems you need to overcome to use this thing.
1. The instructions for the setup are poorly written and do match what really needs to happens.
2. The lights flash different colors at different times but no clear instructions on what they mean.
3. Turning it on and off is not just a simple push of a button. There is a special sequence you have to follow of time and light flashes. Why do they make it difficult and have to return to the instructions? Oh, I forgot, it is not in the little single sheet that came with it, it is on the web somewhere of how to do it.
4. Once you get it setup, there is no way to test it to see if it will indeed send a text to your cellphone.
5. Batteries are said to last 48 hours. They don't! On a flight from the U.S. to Italy with a stop over in Germany, the Trakdot worked the first leg and reported the landing in Germany and the batteries were at 38%. For the second leg from Germany to Italy, no response from Trakdot when we landed. Most likely dead batteries. Battery life I would guess to be about 20 hours. Good enough for domestic travel but not international.

Trakdot would be cool if it worked but in it's current form it is just a pain to use.

Update:
Tried it again on the return trip to the U.S. Theis time no report from Trakdot when changing planes in Germany. It did report the arrival in the U.S. but not until after we had already picked up our bags and was in the parking lot walking to our car. So much for using the app to find your bag on the belt! Battery was at 15%, less than 20 hours of use. In it's present form, Trackdot is not reliable and can not be depended on, basically does not work as advertised. If the bag had been left on departure, there is no way to know where it is since you can not ping it to send out a text. Don't waste your time and money on this device until the problems are worked out.

Great idea but...the battery life is less than 20 hours (no where near 48 hours as claimed) making it completely useless for international travel. It will stop working when you really need it the most (when your bag is lost and sent to another location).

I have used it several times on short flights, like 1 hour flights. After these flights the battery is down to 40%-50%. The batteries didn't last for an international flight from Europe to LA and to Papeete. After LA the batteries died. For some issues, I had contacted customer service twice, however never got a reply. It's a waist of money. I really wonder who would give 5 Stars ............hmmmm.....

I bought two trakdot. I really thought the trakdot was a brilliant idea. On 6 December 2014 I made a trip from NY (JFK).to Rome. I activated my upgraded Trakdot (as explained). Put it on and in slip in my suitcase. I downloaded the app for IOS (BTW very bad app, its only a link to the website so you have to logon all the time). When it was on I look on my Iphone the location of the trakdot. was in LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and I was in Manhattan ! Anyway, I went to JFK took my flight to Rome. After landing in Rome I opened my phone and nothing...Opened the app (log in) and located my Trakdot, it was still in La Guardia…My suitcase arrived normally in Rome with the Trakdot on…No message, no SMS, location wrong…
Basically its not working at all and for me it’s a total waste of money. You need several months or years of development before achieving something working. Why not a rechargeable battery, you have to put new set of battery for each use ? really ? On top, the device is not working (at least my two devices). I really want to know if there is a possibility to be reimburse for my two trakdot. I should say I am very disappointed ! I contacted the Trakdot support one week ago, still no news…So posted on FB, they asked me my email address (still no result). Please avoid at all cost until they solve their problems.

As other reviewers have commented, the battery life is a joke and this renders it useless for international travel, which is what I got it for. In addition to this though, even when working, I'm disappointed. I was expecting to be told the exact location of my luggage, like a GPS coordinate, which it doesn't do. All it knows is the location of the cell tower its connected to. Which means it's somewhere within a several mile radius of the airport. So this will tell you if your baggage arrived to the same city as you, but that's it. And that information frankly isn't all that useful.

If the device is reporting my baggage is somewhere else, what will I do?

1) I will wait at baggage claim staring at the conveyor regardless. Because how do I know the tracker is right? Maybe the batteries died. Maybe it's not getting a good signal for whatever reason. Maybe I have more than one bag and the tracker is in only one of them. For a host of reasons, I'm going to wait and see if the bag shows up no matter what.

2) Even if I'm confident that the tracker is right and the bag is somewhere else, I still have to go to the airliner desk and deal with them anyway. And when I do, what will they say? They will say I need to wait around to see if it comes on the conveyor. If I tell them "well I have a tracking device that says my bag never left such and such" they are going to roll their eyes at me and I'll waste even more time. There or not, I will not get out of waiting on the conveyor to finish.

3) What if the bag traveled on the plane with me but gets lost en route to baggage claim? Bags don't only get lost between cities, they get lost at destination too. So my tracker is telling me the bag is here, but I'm not seeing it on the conveyor.
