Book Description

0964171023 978-0964171022 March 15, 1998
An in-depth comprehensive study on an important form of American folk art named Tramp Art. Illustrated with over 400 color photographs this book begins to dispel the romantic myth that this craft was produced solely in anonymity. Made primarily from discarded cigar boxes and crate wood, combined with the use of simple tools, these craftsmen produced items from small boxes to full size furniture. With chapters relating to the craft, the materials, and the makers this illustrated study provides a valuable reference for collectors, dealers, and others interested in this folk art form produced layer by layer, one notch at a time. With value index.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge leap forward in documenting an overlooked art form., June 5, 1999

This review is from: Tramp Art, One Notch At A Time (Hardcover)
Cliff Wallach has been a fixture for years at antique shows and auctions, ferreting out incredible examples of this little known and under-appreciated art form. But with this book project, he became the first person to really find out who many of the artists were, and are. Wallach has clarified many issues, exploded myths and taken pictures of thousands of otherwise-unknown masterpieces of tramp art. The book is not just a worthy historical document, it's a feast for the eyes, with literally hundreds of color plates.
