Editorial Reviews

Finally, an unadulterated rock & roll record to represent 1999. Trance States in Tongues doesn't deliver much in the way of experimentalism or balladry but instead lets the decibels roast on a pyre of flaming guitars. While these sludgemeisters are known for delivering meaty live shows, their albums haven't been able to match the thrill. Not so this time, as frontman Markus Durant's mostly indecipherable but completely involved vocals--hence the title--meet up in the mix with the rock for a wall of dirty delight. Forget that Zen Guerrilla hails from San Francisco. Trance States in Tongues recalls Detroit's legacy of middle-finger rock & roll à la The Stooges and MC5. Standout cuts include "Slow Motion Rewind," "Ghetto City Version," and a take on "Moonage Daydream" that reshapes Bowie's classic space ballad into an all-out rock & roll anthem. --Jason Josephs

White hot stuff from SF by way of Philly by way of Delaware rhythm-and-bruise auteurs Zen Guerrilla. Not as good as their live shows, which leave your head ringing for days, but as good as it can get in a recorded form. Noisy, distorted, LOUD -- in short, so so good. Oh yeah.

Kids today can keep their Bizkits and their Korns, meanwhile I want loud, fast and loose. Zen Guerrilla delivers. My, how they deliver. It's up there with the New Bomb Turks' debut. Rock's still got some blood left in it, and I suspect some of it's on Zen Guerrilla's teeth.

Why can we get more of these bands, these guys rule and we need to have more around, and that singer is a maniac. Good rock and roll, a blend of punk, hard rock, funk and a lot of soul, this music's got soul to give away all day, and that cover of Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" is awesome. Buy it and "respect the rock".
