Kaboooooom!,

White hot stuff from SF by way of Philly by way of Delaware rhythm-and-bruise auteurs Zen Guerrilla. Not as good as their live shows, which leave your head ringing for days, but as good as it can get in a recorded form. Noisy, distorted, LOUD -- in short, so so good. Oh yeah.

Kids today can keep their Bizkits and their Korns, meanwhile I want loud, fast and loose. Zen Guerrilla delivers. My, how they deliver. It's up there with the New Bomb Turks' debut. Rock's still got some blood left in it, and I suspect some of it's on Zen Guerrilla's teeth.

Why can we get more of these bands, these guys rule and we need to have more around, and that singer is a maniac. Good rock and roll, a blend of punk, hard rock, funk and a lot of soul, this music's got soul to give away all day, and that cover of Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" is awesome. Buy it and "respect the rock".

What can I say about the way this combo from the Bay Area-via-Delaware by way of Philadelphia convey their aural assault over smoking hot flames of guitar, crunching bass and the garbled but impassioned explosion of vocals of Marcus Durant don't already? Not much really, except to compare this band to the MC5, Stooges or any other band of that era doesn't even begin to describe the sonic mayhem this band whips up. Think equal parts of the snaking ache of blues, the muscle of hardcore punk and the passion and soul of downtown r&b and you get the idea of how this dangerous and menacing amalgam of sound is for you. If you can't get up and shout after this, you are not alive. At all....

Zen Guerilla - 'Trance States In Tongue' (Sub Pop),

Third CD from this heavy rock four piece from Newark, Delaware. Tunes here that should impress you on the first spin are "Pins And Needles", "Mod Riot", the in-your-face "Black Eyes Boogie", "What I Got" and the rocking "Preacher's Promise". 'Trance States In Tongue' does indeed have it's moments with some mean harmonica playing, thick guitar riffs and science fiction themes here and there. I saw these guys as they played a dive several times in my area - on this very tour, I believe when they opened for Man Or Astroman? Not a bad act to experience in a live setting.

This is the only way I know how to describe this band. It seems almost an injustice to label them. If you like music, you will like, if not love this recording. I only gave 4 stars because there is no comparison to thier live show. I would equate it to a religious experience!Their music is real. It is powerfull. And, it is magnificent! |
