Blutengel is growing.
For a time, although turning out quality music, Blutengel had sort of worked themselves into a musical rut. The music was good, and stayed within the Blutengel form, but they really didn't grow much. This wasn't a bad thing, it just kept the music pretty much interchangeable between the releases. The songs, although different, could interchange chord s and st anzas between different Blutengel songs, and still sound good.

On Tränenherz [Tear Heart in English], Blutengel steps out of the mold part way from the previous recent releases and places a foot on new ground. This is a welcome change. The songs on Tränenherz are all Blutengel in style, but gone is the interchangability and lets each song form it's own identity. Also, reduced to a minimum, it the distorted vocals. Now you can hear almost all the words! Now we can hear Chris Pohl's and the other's actual vocal capabilities without it being studio manipulated! The group also now use the synthesizers to great effect, exploring new sounds and expanding the sound. This cuts down on the interchangability between the songs and enhances the individuality of each song. A few times I wasn't even entirely sure I had a Blutengel cd the changes were so different than past releases!

This is how Blutengel should sound and be today!

I am not going to review each song, just a sampling. This is an expansive work and is going to take alot of listening, which is a great sign for a recording.

So far "Save Me" is sticking in my head due to the female backing vocals which make it just devine!

"Irgendwann" , although sung in German, is catchy with swirling synths and a sing along chorus. Or at least i attempt to sing along, even though I do not speak German.

After the subpar 2009 album Schwarzes Eis, I was afraid that my beloved Blutengel had jumped the proverbial shark. I was not impressed with Schwarzes Eis so much that I skipped Soultaker. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to hear Tranenherz until I heard the first single "Reich mir die Hand" back in February. I was immediately hooked by the song with Chris Pohl's deep vocals and catchy melodies. I decided to give the band another shot and bought the deluxe addition of Tranenherz. The second cd consists of tracks that the band decided not to use on the actual album (disc 1). I have been enjoying Tranenherz a lot lately. I have to admit as much as I enjoyed ex-Blutengel singer Constance Rudert's vocals on past albums, I really like the new vocalists Steffi and Anja (don't worry Ulrike is still with the band). The material on this album has better melodies and lyrics. The second disc is very good. They hold up quite well considering that they are discarded tracks. I personally enjoy Tranenherz immensely. Definitely well worth the money for me.
