Editorial Reviews

The Candlelight Guitarist's Time of Tranquility is relaxing and romantic instrumental music to warm heart & soul. With the theme of an evening gathering of friends and loved ones, it offers the Candlelight Guitarist in combination with cello, violin, alto flute, English horn, mandolin, flugelhorn, concertina, string bass and percussion. From the dreamy textures of Bells of Eventide, the gentle mandolin accents on Tulip Festival, the rich romanticism of Twilight Tango and Lady of The Sea, to the romantic Spanish guitar of Light In The Night (Luz En La Noche), the CD offers an escape to a soothing musical hideaway. The Chef's Sonata, a four-course musical tribute, is the perfect relaxing dining ambience for that special cook in your life. The nature sounds include ocean, streams, rainfall, and wildlife, recorded in the beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington and along the scenic Oregon Coast. The Bells of Eventide opening bells were recorded at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano (famous for return of the swallows each spring). A CD for your personal Time of Tranquility. TIME: 58+ minutes.

The musicians include: Ms. Bobbye Hall, percussion. Bobbye joined the legendary Motown rhythm section in her early teens, and played on dozens of Motown hits like I Heard It Through The Grapevine and For Once In My Life. Bobbye has recorded with Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, U2, Seals & Crofts, Boz Scaggs, Bob Seger, and many others. Melissa Hasin, cello - Missy has worked with Natalie Cole, No Doubt (Don't Speak), Barbra Streisand, David Benoit, Tori Amos, John Tesh, Melissa Manchester & others. On stage she has backed Sammy Davis, Jr., Smokey Robinson, Frank Sinatra in 1996, and Led Zeppelin alumni Robert Plant & Jimmy Page. Jim Sitterly, violin, mandolin & concertina. Jim has recorded for Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, Macy Grey, Stevie Wonder, and others. He is concertmaster for John Tesh, and for the TV orchestras for LOST and ALIAS. Gilberto Hildavio, alto flute, English horn and recorder. Hildavio has performed with Sergio Mendez, Diana Krall, Kenny Rodgers, Barry Manilow, The Manhattan Transfer, The Four Tops, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, & others. Paul Seaforth, flugelhorn. Paul has performed from Carnegie Hall to Tchaikovsky Hall in Russia. He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Eric Marienthal, Dash Crofts, Dan Seals, & others. Ernie Nunez, string bass. Ernie has recorded & toured with The Brian Setzer Orchestra and Les Brown's Band of Renown, & others. The Candlelight Guitarist is Bradley Powell. Inspired by The Beatles, he began guitar lessons at age ten. At fifteen Brad became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar from Vincenzo Macaluso, with master classes at CSUN under Dr. Ronald Purcell and Andrés Segovia. At the Hollywood Bowl, Brad has performed Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra with the composer conducting, and a Carpenters medley under the baton of Richard Carpenter. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (Little House on The Prairie) and has composed underscore for TV shows including Hill Street Blues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheres, March 1, 2010

This review is from: Time of Tranquility (Trios and such, with Pacific Northwest nature sounds) (Audio CD)
Brad Powell, better known among music collectors as The Candlelight Guitarist', has produced yet another CD of music for guitar and for songs that are inspired by peace and tranquility. This album is particularly fine, released as it is in a time when tranquility seems almost completely out of reach with the world situation as chaotic as it is. But for those in sensory overload, buy this CD!

Powell has engaged the assistance of six musicians - Bobbye Hall and her broad spectrum of percussion, Melissa Hasin on cello, Jim Sitterly on violin/mandolin/concertina, Gilberto Hildavio on allto flute/English horn/recorder, Paul Seaforth on flugelhorn, and Ernie Nunez on string bass, fine musicians all - and with these companions he has composed and arranged `trios and such' that range from `Bells of Eventide' that opens the concert, to `The Chef's Sonata' in four courses, to `Light in the Night'. Not only is his music creative and inventive as music alone, but Powell also adds background sounds to enhance the overall effect - sounds of the ocean advancing and retreating, bells from the towers of missions, wild life, etc.

One of the pleasures of Brad Powell's many CDs is his lack of pushing the recording to be a `hit' - it simply is music to soothe and calm and enrich the psyche. Would that there were more Brad Powells out there to help us all through these times. The world would be a saner place! Grady Harp, March 10

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok, I know I gush!, March 15, 2010
This review is from: Time of Tranquility (Trios and such, with Pacific Northwest nature sounds) (Audio CD)
I must have listened to this cd 50 times over the last few days. I don't know what it is, but I seem to hear new things each time. It has to be my favourite out of all his cds (and I have them all). I don't wish to sound overly gushing in praise...(I'd hate to make you sick in your coffee), but this is truly beautiful and magical music. I honestly can't recommend this cd enough. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The relaxing sounds of Brad Powell, March 2, 2010

This review is from: Time of Tranquility (Trios and such, with Pacific Northwest nature sounds) (Audio CD)
"Time of Tanquility" is just that, peacfull, calm, nature sounds, with Brad Powell composing all of the music and playing guitar, along with Melissa Hasin on cello,Ernie Nunez on string bass,Paul Seaforth on Flugelhorm,Ms.Bobbye Hall on percussion,Jim Sitterly on Violin, mandolin and Concertiana, and Gilberto Hildavio on alto flute,English horn and recorder.I have to include all of these great musicians.Together they have recorded a wonderfull CD.My favorite track is"Celestial Concertina,"along with "Twilight Tango," but I enjoyed all of the cuts. Each number starts with peacefull Ocean sounds,or soft rain.I have all of Brad's records, and I play them most of the time, even when I have company over while there talking. The music is relaxing. Its a nice change from the other types of music we usually listen to.
