Nice Pictures, Not Enough Information, Worth Your Time,

This review is from: Trans-Am: The Pony Car Wars 1966-1972 (Hardcover)
This book would more appropriately be titled as a photo history. The pictures are great! The author's text and captions almost assume you already know the history of the series and are often repetitive. The word "dominated" is used three times in the second paragraph of the book and after about the forth time one does get tired of being reminded that there was no drivers championship before 1972. That said, this would be a three star book. What takes it up a notch are the quotes from the drivers and other series participants that are included on most pages. I attended Trans Am races in 1970 & 1971 and was an avid fan of the series. The quotes add a nice perspective and bring new material to light.

This review is from: Trans-Am: The Pony Car Wars 1966-1972 (Hardcover)
This book is a gem! A pictorial history of Trans-Am.If you love Trans-Am racing especially the early years such as the first generation of Ford Mustangs, etc then this book will please most people.
Its a photographic history so its full of photos. There are many colour(Aussie spelling of color)photos but mostly black & white photos throughout. What this book lacks is detailed information. There isnt any details relating to each race track and no technical info on any of the cars. But,for anyone interested in plenty of photos of all the makes then this book is a gem.Its a big book and good value too.

I think the book is well-written and I especially enjoyed both the photographs and the tables in the back of the book listing every race of the Trans-Am series with the date and the order of finishing. Friedman gave a lot of detail about the teams and the heat of the competition. A good book for persons interested in what the competition was like then.

Great pictures, needs more technical detail,

This review is from: Trans-Am: The Pony Car Wars 1966-1972 (Hardcover)
Great pics of a great era in racing and good historical recaps of each season. But the meat that this book is missing is the technical details of the cars and how they were prepared. Also would have been nice to have more behind the scenes details of the teams and factory backing. While everyone is familiar with big names of the era, it would have been interesting to get a look at some of the independant cars that were being campaigned and what life was like for those guys. All in all though, a great book if you are a muscle car fan of the 60's.

too many photos-not technical enough,

This is a great book if all you want to do is look at the body type and nothing underneath the sheetmetal. So many manufacturers created high performance parts specifically for t/a racing that this book never shows you. A picture of a complete or even dissassembled tunnel port boss 302, t/a 340, amc 390, or Datsun OR ANY ENGINE would be nice. Also, other sources have these cars as being very colorful with lots of unique graphics that black and white photos do no justice to. Finally, many of the pictures seem to repeat themselves. The same car rounding the same type of turns ect...

A Detailed Account of a Classic Era,

David Friedman has done an excellent job of telling the story of the Trans-American Racing Series with this well-written, beautifully illustrated, all around interesting book. This book follows the pattern of Friedman's others, such as his on the Shelby Cobra, which tells the story behind the car, behind the race. It gives you the perspective of not only witnessing the era, but gives details of the inner workings of the Automotive industry at the time. If you like the Pony Car era, and like racing, you'll be interested to read this book.
