5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Potter's Triumphant Transatlantic Crossing May 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In case you're reluctant to purchase this because of minimal product description--don't wait any longer. This is the amazing Denmark Radio big band royally commandeered by none other than Chris Potter, who composes, arranges and conducts--in addition to being the principal soloist. Exciting, challenging but highly accessible charts see this wonderful band (that has hosted scores of American originals) soaring to new heights. The recording was made in January of 2010 when Chris was absolutely at the height of his powers. It swings, roars, ascends to moments of great beauty and serenity and surveys the realm of the universe we know. It's hard to believe that Chris' website has not yet listed this as a full-fledged Chris Potter album. SONG FOR ANYONE may be a more personal and hard-won project, but this is a triumph of classic proportions--and a landmark in the on-going history of the development of jazz music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris Potter - Big Band - Swingin' Post Bop December 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Overview:
On "Transatlantic" Chris Potter switches gears from the small group bands he has been working with and crosses the Atlantic to lead a big band in Denmark. Chris Potter composed all the songs on the album and conducts the performance by the 18 piece "DR Big Band". Chris Potter also shows off his top of the line sax soloing skills on most of the tunes. I'm not familiar with the musicians that make up the "DR Big Band", but I believe that they are from Denmark. The music on the album is fairly straight-forward swinging post bop. It does not get quite as wild as some of Potter's contemporary big band leaders (e.g. Hollenbeck, JD Argue). However, the songs are quite interesting with many intertwining parts. Potter, who in my opinion is one of top soloists today, has many blistering solos throughout. This is one of Potter's best recordings to date. The big band is the perfect backdrop for his fiery solos.

Song Highlights:
The Steppes - My guess is this tune is inspired by the Central Asia Steppes region. It has a worldly tinge and reminds me of some classical pieces written by Russian composers about this part of the world. There is a nice solo by guitarist "Per Gade" on this tune.

Rumination - This tune opens with a reflective Monkish statement by Potter and pianist Magnus Hjort. It quickly segues into an upbeat, funky interlude where the drums and bass remind me a bit of something you might hear in a Super Marios game soundtrack. Over the top of that backdrop are some nice sweeping horn lines. About half way through the drums speed up and get frantic and so does Potter's solo.

Quick - This tunes opens up with a staccato brass and drums line. After a few bars the reeds come in with an intertwining line. After a few more bars the piano, bass and guitar nicely blend in. This is a terrific opening to the tune and the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Potter does it again August 13, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
At some point, the light will go on and the world will finally realize that Chris Potter is in fact one of the all-time great tenors in the history of jazz, right up there with Lester Young, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter and, yes, Saint John himself. This 2010 session with Potter fronting a powerhouse Danish big band pushes the envelope yet again. Not only is he playing at the top of his game, but the material--all of which he wrote and arranged himself--is exceptional. A stone classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars An increadible piece of music January 29, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Chris Potter is a leading sax voice of Generation. Accompanied by superb DR band he created an outstanding album.
His compositional and improvisational ideas are equally original. His performance is fantastic.
New horizons in music and jazz.
