Advantages of Solid State Technology vs. Traditional HDD

Insert Alt Text here

Shock Resistant

Unlike traditional hard drives, SSDs are manufactured with reliable NAND flash memory. As SSDs contain no moving parts, they are more resilient to mechanical failures that can result from vibration, shock or heat.

Extended Battery Life

When used in a portable device, the SSD’s positive attributes like an increased battery life and light weight become particularly apparent.

SSD Scope Software

Key features of the SSD Scope Software include:

TRIM Command

For Windows 7, TRIM command releases allocated memory by deleting unnecessary data. By communicating with the operating system, TRIM automatically removes deleted data permanently, eliminating the need to secure erase all data on the drive. Consequently, the optimum write speed of your SSD is maintained, and the lifetime is maximized. For operating systems which do not support the TRIM command, SSD 320 will utilize its garbage collection to manage free space. In addition, wear-leveling and ECC error correction is integrated to ensure reliable data transfers.

I decided to buy this drive over others because the noted max read/write is higher than comparable units on amazon costing upwards of 20 dollars more. When you are talking about something that costs less than 200 the difference comes out to be more than 10%.

I bought this SSD as a last ditch effort to keep my old gaming PC going (SATAII not SATAIII) so I can't vouch for performance benchmarks but my overall impression is that SSD is quite the upgrade over HDD. For me most noticeable difference is SC2 load times dropped. (The one game where you have a dedicated screen to tell you how fast other users load)

Three things to note:
1. The holes in the bracket are about 1.68 and 2.38 inches apart. I have an Antec P182 case and it wouldn't install into the removable HD bay because of case design. It fits fine in my other case so you might want to double check yours.
2. It took me a while to realize SSD scope is on the Transcend website (URL is on the side of the box). Use SSD scope as an easy way to check you have TRIM enabled on windows, this is important for SSD drives.
3. System clone is included in SSD scope software. But if you have some time just re-install windows on this baby, way faster than HDD and you will enjoy fresh install of windows even more.

I bought this to replace the HDD in my Macbook Pro but ended up keeping the old HDD as a Bootcamp drive in the optical bay. One thing to note if you plan on doing this: Install your SSD into the main bay and use the old HDD in your optical bay. The optical bay in mine has a 3 Gb connection which will bottleneck an SATA III drive and word in the forums has it that even with a 6 Gb optical bay connection you'll run into some crashing with SSDs.

That all said... This. Drive. Is. Awesome. I actually wasn't expecting much of a difference when I decided to switch to SSD. However, after a week with this drive I'm hooked and buying two more for my desktop. After installing a fresh copy of Mac OS X Mountain Lion and reinstalling all my apps it runs like a new computer. Boot up is in 22 seconds and apps like Microsoft Office and Starcraft open within seconds. Video and photo editing are a breeze. I have an i7 with 16 GB of ram but with a 7200 HDD and frankly the core2duo MBP with this SSD is a more pleasant experience. I did some research before choosing this model and for the price, you can't find a better drive period. Benchmarks coming soon...

Just got this as an upgrade for the Toshiba SSD my Macbook Pro came with and wow is it fast! Build quality is really good too with an all metal enclosure. A quick Blackmagic test confirms the read/write speed of this SSD to be on par or faster than most other SandForce 2281 driven SATAIII SSDs (such as the Intel 330/520, Sandisk Extreme, series). Response time when using Aperture has decreased noticeably and basic tasks such as file transfers to my Optibay 1 TB HDD have become significantly faster. As of today, this drive has the lowest price amongst all other SATA 3 500MB/s+ R/W SSDs on Amazon. The 3 year warranty is pretty good as well. Judging from my past dealings with Transcend, I don't have anything to worry about.

If you're in the market for an SSD this one is a pretty good choice.

I purchased this 128GB SSD 320 on Wednesday when Amazon had it featured for an attractive price. Well it arrived today and I already installed this little beauty. I thought my system was fast before, oh no my friends, now it literally screams. 560MB/s! Can we say HTPC with awesome streaming?

Transcend includes the mounting rack so that I can install this 2.5 inch drive into my 3.5 drive bay. Very nice to have because I didn't want to spend another $10 or so for the kit.

My system specs:

Intel Core i5-3570K
16GB DDR3 1600
128GB SSD 320 by Transcend (OS Windows 7 64bit) --> Changed to Transcend 256GB SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5 inch SSD 560/530 MB/s TS256GSSD320
2TB 7200RPM HDD (Just for fun)
4TB NAS Drive (Buffalo Cloudstor Pro for even more fun)

A bit of advice for people, if you are going to use an SSD as your OS hard drive, do some research on cache settings, defragmentation, hibernation, etc just to make sure that you have it setup and fine tuned the way it's supposed to be. Also, install programs to the SSD, but try to keep your read/writes (like movies, music, photos) to a separate, larger capacity, spinning hard drive.

Now that I am an official convert to SSD I am considering putting the Transcend 256GB SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5 inch SSD 560/530 MB/s TS256GSSD320into my Mom's Macbook Pro 2009 model and another Transcend 128GB SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5 inch SSD 560/530 MB/s TS128GSSD320in my Dad's netbook.

Folks this Drive is equipped with the Sandforce 2281 Controller that is know to have a defective Firmware Version 5.0.1. which has broken TRIM. Please Google sanforce 5.0.1 broken TRIM you can read all about it. There are tons about it and more every day as Manufacturers scramble to release new Firmware now that the word is out that they were selling defective Drives!!
My best guess is Transcend like everyone else who uses sandforce controllers(Intel is the exception) utilize the sandforce produced firmware as base code & develop from it and put a finish Transcend Firmware Version Release on it. This Drive has L0309.
Sandisk also has a Firmware called R201 which has been confirmed to have the same broken TRIM problem.
Google Sandisk Broken TRIM you can read all about it.
This also explains the poor benchmarks in AS SSD, CrystalDiskMark Benchmarks I have experienced. They are dismal. I have run that benchmark with my Samsung & Plextor drives that do not have sandforce controllers & achieved almost maximum marks. I also have a sanforce Corsair GT 240GB with the new 5.0.3 firmware. I did a secure erase reinstalled OS and now it is also getting high marks in AS SSD & CrystalDiskMark which were horrible before the flash. All of these drive also score well in ATTO so I think the problem with this Drive is the base code of the controller Firmware is the broken sanforce 5.0.1. I really think Trancend is blowing smoke when they say we only measure by ATTO. I do not think they are even aware that they may have broken firmware and they think that ATTO is the only benchmark. (Remember this Company is a new Player in SSDs)My Corsair performed the same way until I flashed it with the new Firmware.

Hi JJD419,

Thanks for your feedback.

To fix this issue with TRIM, so please follow the instructions below:

1.- Connect the SSD via SATA (Primary or secondary)
2.- Please donwload the file from http://tw.transcend-info.com/BranchOffice/SSD720_SSD320_MSA720.rar .
3.- Uncompress the file, and copy it on your desktop.
4.- Open the folder and select the folder that belongs to the description of your drive. Example, if you have the drive 256GB SSD 320, so open the folder name "TS256GSSD320_FW504_WINDOWS"
5.- Double click on the application, and wait until the application detect your drive.
6.- Click on the button "Update Firmware"
7.- Wait until is finish, then click on "Rescan for drives", and check for the FW version that should be 5.0.4
