I got this for use in Linux and almost was ready to send it back... read on, it gets better.

I inserted the card into the PCI express slot on my laptop, connected the included USB power cable to an open USB 2.0 port and the other end to the card. I then connected my 1TB USB drive to the adapter, but only got a USB 3.0 ports available response by the Kernel (# tail -f /var/log/messages). I tried unplugging the card, re-inserting without seeing the drive populate /dev.

I decided to power the hard drive with the power adapter. This made me realize that connecting the power to the drive and the drive to the adapter then inserting the card works perfectly.

I'm very pleased and get nearly 10 times the speed on read/write using ext4 to ext4.

This worked for me in Fedora 15 & Knoppix 6.5, but failed to work or even respond to the Kernel in Debian squeeze/sid.

Worked on same laptop for win 7. Upgraded to win 8 and device driver software did not work. Loaded the drivers for it again still did not work. Uninstalled it and let win 8 load the drivers. Still nothing. Reimaged lc to win 7 and it worked. Plan on returning it for different product that is win 8 compatible.

I have five of these in use with older Lenovo and HP laptops. This is a great little card. The chipset is from Japan, and it is assembled in Taiwan. With mainland China, there is a wide spread of quality, so each item has to be examined carefully. But, sourced from Taiwan, quality is relatively assured.

There is one harmless glitch. If nothing is plugged into the card, the power management circuitry inside the card will cause it to continuously be detected and removed. I have not found a way around this. However, it is a good idea to plug the drive into the card first anyway, because the insertion force for the USB connectors is much higher than for the Expresscard slot.

This is an excellent choice for an external USB 3.0 drive with Windows 7. For your consideration, here are CrystalDiskMark benches of a Western Digital 1TB 5400RMP Scorpio BLue laptop drive attached to a Lenovo W500 two different ways: by a USB 3.0 dongle converter attached to the Transcend USB 3.0 card, and by a Startech ESATA controller. The Transcend combination is actually faster at sequential read, probably because the Silicon Image controller chips used by every ESATA card I've seen seem to have a 50MB/s cap on read.

I went with this over all other products due to the product name. Transcend always has been trusted product for myself.

Pros:
you now have USB 3.0
been using for couple weeks and works great

Cons:
Uses an additional USB. Don't try connecting to usb hub (my Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 starts beeping for more power).
USB is a tight fit when using both ports.
When plugging something in you have to be careful for not undoing the express slot.

I would recommend this probably over every other product as of Sept. If there ever comes one without using an extra USB I would probably purchase that one instead.

Pros:
If you need USB 3.0 speed on an aging laptop - this is way to go. Worked as soon as I had it plugged in.
Cons:
Its a bit cumbersome as it occupies a regular USB to power it and on my Lenovo Ideapad it blocked 2 other USB ports - as a result I lost 3 USB 2.0 ports to gain 2 faster ones. So I would advise checking the location of the expresscard slot beforehand.

I installed this on my Lenovo T410 running Windows 7. Immediately after installing (and possibly after one reboot) it will recharge my cellphone, but it did not work as a USB 3.0 port. I tried a few things, including uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers without success. I was going to give up on it, but on next reboot, everything worked perfectly. I connected a USB 3.0 external display adapter to it which works flawlessly.

If your devices don't draw much power, the power cord to draw power from another USB port does not need to be connected.

Would give it 5 stars except for the fact that it is loose side-to-side in older laptops that expect the wider pcamci cards, which a cheap clip-on piece of plastic would fix nicely. Electronically, it works great.
