Very easy installation.

It's held in by a couple of small tabs near the front edge – they come out without forcing, and the SSD is held in the tray with a single Torx screw.

I just got my 960GB today & phew! it works great with my 15". Transcend no longer says these are compatible with the 15" RMBP because SOME motherboards are placed slightly out of position & so it may not fit (Read D.Choi's One-Star Review here & see below). Luckily, I didn't have that problem.

Transcend explains the issue more fully on MacRumors (unfortunately I can't provide a link here, but search Transcend on that site to find this):

What we’ve found:

1. 13” Retina MacBook Pros are not affected by this issue since the SSD is located in it’s own plastic tray beneath the trackpad. Transcend’s JetDrive 720 is fully compatible with the 13” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

2. JetDrive 500 and 520 are not affected by this issue.

3. We have found that on some 15” Retina MacBook Pros, Apple’s assembly tolerances may allow for the motherboard to be shifted slightly to the right, decreasing the clearance between the speaker and the back of the SSD. The reduced clearance caused by the shifted motherboard will prevent our JetDrive 720 from seating correctly since it is 0.5mm longer than the stock SSD. We are therefore announcing that our JetDrive 720 is currently incompatible with the 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Our next steps:
1. We will change all Amazon listings and our own website to reflect this issue.
2. We will redesign our JetDrive 720 PCB to be the exact length as the stock SSD, making it fully compatible with both the 13” and 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display.

I have a mid-2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, model 10,1

I bought the 960GB version to replace my stock Apple 512GB SSD, since I was almost out of space on that drive. After I ordered the drive, Transcend changed their compatibility details to exclude 15" Retina MacBook Pros, but I had no problems installing the SSD in my machine, thankfully!

The bad news is that the installation instruction video and Quick Start Guide are woefully inadequate and it took me quite a bit of searching to figure out exactly how to clone my existing SSD to the external JetDrive before swapping it out into the Macbook Pro. I am running OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and my original drive was FileVault encrypted. Here's how I went about my installation, hopefully this will save someone else a bunch of time and make it easier to perform! (Four stars for the crud instructions, otherwise I'm very happy with the product, so far!)

Oh and BlackMagic Speed Test records write speeds of 415MB/s and read speeds of 450MB/s, so this is a nice, fast, large, if slightly costly, upgrade!

Installation Instructions for OS X 10.9.3 users (with FileVault enabled on original SSD / HDD):

1. Install the JetDrive into the external enclosure provided and plug in the enclosure to an empty USB slot
2. Start the MacBook up, holding down Command + R. This will load the restore options. (This step wasted a good deal of my time)
3. Click on Disk Utility
4. Highlight Macintosh HD (or whatever your existing SSD / HDD is called)
5. Click on Unlock in the menu bar, if your source drive is FileVault enabled. You cannot clone the drive while it is FileVault locked. (This step wasted a good deal of my time as well)
6. Enter your password
7.

Like the previous reviewer, I followed the quick start guide to clone the old drive to the new, then used the ifixit dot com web site for the detailed instructions on installing the replacement SSD. The Transcend instructions leave out the part where you should disconnect the battery, and for that you will need a few extra torx screw drivers (see ifixit instructions). I didn't feel comfortable replacing the drive with the batteries connected.

Anyway, everything is back together and seems to be working fine. The boot screen seems a little bit slower, like the macbook is trying to decide which partition to boot from, but once booted, everything is very zippy, and I've doubled my space (240G).

Update: I just booted the new drive using the recovery partition (see quick start guide). When exiting, the recovery utility asked which hard drive I wanted to boot from and I chose the Transcend (the only one displayed). Now boot speed is VERY fast. No more pause trying to find the boot disk. Five stars!

This fit my Macbook Pro 13" with Retina display. If you are unsure, check Transcend's website for a complete matrix of models these fit.

The video showing the the install process does a good job. Included with the hard drive is a complete set of instructions (also on Transcend's website) showing the process. It is very easy with the only tricky part being the tiny screws which are used throughout. My big hands made it a bit tough.

There are two special screwdrivers included which are not common. They have the type and size printed on the handle making it easy to make sure you're use the right screwdriver. Using the wrong one could potentially round out a screw and that would be no fun. You do not need other tools but tweezers for the small screws and magnified reading glasses might be helpful.

This is a simple process which should take less than one hour for anyone and likely less than 30 minutes for most. I suggest clearing out a work space free from kids, pets, and distractions and putting down a towel so when you drop a screw (and you will), it will not bounce on the floor never to be found.

One last thing...

With the Apple 128 GB SSD, I booted in 7 seconds. One the first boot, the Transcend 480 GB SSD took *30 seconds* or so and made for some premature panic. However it worked fine and subsequent boots were about the same 7-8 seconds as the Apple SSD.
