This review is from: Transcend JetFlash V10 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive TS16GJFV10 (Green) (Personal Computers)
When my 4GB Ducati SanDisk Extreme USB flash drive started filling up on a regular basis, I knew it was time yet again for something bigger. Hard to believe 4GB isn't big enough! Back in the old days, I remember buying an external 1GB hard drive for a Sun workstation. It cost thousands and I thought "What will I ever do with one gigabyte of storage?". Oh well...So I figured I'd jump right past 8GB and go for a 16GB USB flash drive. I use flash drives to transfer files, images and data for a website. I looked around but couldn't find a 16GB drive that was reasonably priced but fast - then I found this Transcend "JetFlash" V10 16GB and bought one even though I didn't know much about it, basically because it was the cheapest 16GB USB Flash drive I found from a known brand. The case is made from a thin semi-transparent plastic, and the chrome bar around it is actually chrome plated plastic. It does feel cheap, has a hollow sound and feels a bit flimsy. I can squeeze it between my fingers and it flexes. I'm not happy about that, especially after using my very, very hefty Ducati SanDisk Extreme, but Transcend gives a lifetime warranty with the drive, so that's a good thing. It has a slider to move the USB connector in and out, so you don't need a cap. The slider feels ok and it locks the tip in position, but I wonder also how long this will last. I'm guessing that anyone that needs a 16GB flash drive is a serious and frequent user, so you'd think they'd have spent a few more pennies and made the thing more robust. I did some casual testing, copying a folder with 213MB of data back and forth to the Transcend and 2 other drives, the Ducati SanDisk and a 4GB Sony Micro Vault Tiny. The Sony is the smallest USB flash drive I've ever seen; about the size of my thumbnail and only the same width as the USB port itself. This is an advantage, but it's always been very slow; I think they use a compression algorithm to fit the 4GB on such a tiny wafer, and that slows things down. Copying the 213MB folder to the Sony took 2 min. 48 sec. Deleting it on the Sony took 32 seconds, and writing it back to the Dell D410 notebook took 21 seconds. It took 24 seconds to write the folder to the Ducati SanDisk 4GB; 2 seconds to delete it and 16.8 seconds to copy it back to the Dell. The Transcend actually did pretty well, considering the Ducati SanDisk drive is unusually fast (but way expensive). It took 47 seconds to write the same folder to the Transcend 16GB; 3.9 seconds to delete it and 17 seconds to copy it back to the Dell. Not bad at all! Since the most important thing to me in a USB flash drive is speed (assuming some level of confidence that the files won't get corrupted), I'm pleased with the Transcend and it should have enough room for me for a while anyway. I wish it had a more robust build quality, but I guess I'll have to count on the warranty to help me out if something goes wrong.

Fluke maybe?,

This product only worked for about a week before it died on me. I was using it in my car as my head unit has a USB input slot. I had a 4gb thumb drive in there for about a year and it worked great. I'm not sure if I hit a fluke with this Transcend thumb drive. Or this just wasn't designed to be used in a car stereo. I just really wish I had keep box so I can return this. :(

Just got this drive and I like it. I am getting about 22MB/s read and 12MB/s write, very much in line with the specifications. 500MB file took 40 secs to write and just 22 secs to read. One thing I don't understand is why the light is blue when the drive is green... why not make it in some more matching colors ? Another small thing is the capless design - it rattles a little bit. The drive holds very tightly in the "open" position but feels it will slide out easily when in the "closed" position. I do however like it a lot and recommend.

I was looking for a fast USB drive, which is not common these days. I've had my current drive (JetFlash 256 MB) since 2004. It's still working perfectly, but let's just say I was more than ready for more space. This drive is simply awesome. Big capacity with fast writing speeds (about 10-13 MB/s) and very fast reading speeds (about 25-30 MB/s). Bottom line, first class product for those who want something more with a USB drive.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! LOOK ELSEWHERE!!! When I purchased this product, it was inexpensive and had positive reviews. I should say that I was satisfied with the product until it died on me recently. It locked up for no apparent reason (there is no lock switch), and the company's website has a software to correct the problem and possibly recover data (although the only working option may be 'erase all data'. You have to wonder why the company has a recovery software page under Contact Support page...). I was a fool to store some valuable materials in the flash drive, and it seems like there is no hope to recover those items. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! This product is not reliable--I will NEVER purchase another item from Transcend. My Cruzer-mini USB drive from SanDisk still works well after 4 years. Go and get a SanDisk drive.

I purchased this item in December '08 and, after a few days usage, it simply stopped working. The PC said it was protected against writing and did not let me copy/delete any files at all. I contacted Transcend and they asked me to run a few tests, not having any result. Lucky me, right before sending it back for RMA, I decided to test on my brand new Win 7 instalation. Surprisingly, Win 7 got to format it and, since then, the flashdrive has been working flawlessly. It is fast (average 15.5mb/s) and it sure is BIG!!

I had previously used a 4 GB SanDisk drive, and this thing is MUCH FASTER! I use my drives to run Linux off of, and This works excellently, I can run some nice 3D games at it, and the read speed is fast enough that it doesn't break up the gameplay. Nice warranty too, and wow, 16 GIG is a ton for a flash drive. I want another one.

I got this flash drive a month ago and I love it. Plenty of storage and it's really cheap for the price. I read previous review that said it's flimsy, it is not flimsy for me at all. Overall this little thing worth every penny of your bucks.

Just after the returnability this thing died -- nothing could even see it as a valid 'drive' -- the computer recognized it as a usb thumb drive; but couldn't format it; view it; use low level tools to see it -- tried with windows, mac, & linux -- nothing could see it or the data on it.It was always ejected properly and was used in 'read only' mode (iow: I wrote a bunch of data files to it initially; then only copied the files off ....) |
