I bought this reader for portability and I only use CF and SD mostly...

Few PLUSES:
- It's tiny! (half the size of my Sandisk ImageMate Reader)
- It has CF, SD, microSD (I use microSD least though)
- LED blinks when you insert - sometimes have to wait about 5 seconds to detect.
- works on both my Mac and PC
- works on all my super old SD cards (non SDHC ones)

Tips / Few points to be aware of:
- If you insert both microSD and SD side by side, it only read the first one that you insert.
- So, do one at a time... I was just curious if it can read all 3 cards at the same time.
- USB 3.0 is not supported by Mac (at least at the time of this writing)

Bought this because my new computer didn't have a cf card slot like on my old notebook. It's small, but that's where the pluses end. I bent the pins inside the cf reader after about 3 uses because the CF Slot is not very tight, it allows way too much movement when you insert the cards. Tried to fix it by pulling it apart then using needlenose pliers to bend the pins back, but no luck. Inserting a CF Card is like playing the old board game Operation.

Kept using it for my SD card collection, but I misplaced the cable during a critical shoot and couldn't empty my cards. Ran to a few stores looking for the cable, but these USB-to-Micro-USB cables are nowhere to be found offline. Ended up having to buy extra SD cards instead.

Would only recommend this for SD cards if you plan to just leave it on your desktop. Not recommended for CF Cards or travelling in the field, since bent pins or losing the cable could render you out of commission.

I tested this with a sandisk extreme 16gb, 60MB/s card. used a 5.8 GB picture folder, with many jpeg and raw files in it. The computer is an i7 2600K. write speed to card burst at 55mb/sec, and sustains at around 45 mb/sec. Much more importantly, read speed off the card bursts at 95 mb/sec, and sustains above 70 MB/sec for the entire 5 gig. for comparison, my sandisk extreme usb card reader, peaks read at around 25 mb/sec from same card. so this thing is easily 3 times as fast.
I tested the reading in to an SSD card to make sure the bottle neck is my memory card and not the write speed of hard drive.
I also have no issues with this card hanging the computer up during boot.

With 300x UDMA CF cards, I get around 43 MB/s, where as over USB 2, I get 25 MB/s with the same cards. I haven't tried any other cards or USB3 card readers.

As a side note, it can't be connected when booting, or it loops through the boot screens. I hear this is a motherboard chipset issue that occurs with many devices though.

I normally don't bother to write reviews, but in this instance I felt it necessary. I ignored other folks warnings, and took the risk of buying this unit, and would like to urge you to reconsider any thoughts you may have about purchasing it. I've read the positive reviews, and yes it seems to work great when hooked up to my Windows 7 x64 machine - specifically when used to read Transcend 8GB and 32GB SDHC cards. Although I didn't bother to do any exhaustive troubleshooting, I've tried reading raw image files off multiple Transcend 32GB CF cards, formatted in both a Nikon D3X and D800, and can't. Photoshop complains about file truncation. The same image files are fine if transferred over USB from the respective cameras (and yes they're the same file size down to the byte according to Windows explorer when copied either way). Oh, and if you think you're going to hook it up to mac just for "testing purposes" (since they don't support it), expect corrupted files (raw, png are two cases I saw) just for trying to open them up. And yes, I did upgrade it to the latest firmware, which made no difference.

Maybe under the right conditions this is going to be the card reader of your dreams. I wish you the best of luck if you buy it. Just don't be disappointed when the data you copy off the cards is garbage.

I should have paid attention to the 1-star reviews. This is the worst card reader I've ever purchased. I plugged it into my Win7 64-bit desktop USB2 and inserted a SanDisk 16GB Extreme SDHC card. It took forever to detect the card (even after the drivers were installed). Then simply reading photos from the card in LR4 resulted in Win7 crashing with a BSOD. Stupidly, I repeated the process with the same BSOD. The BSOD was reproducible.

So I moved the reader to a USB3 expresscard port on a laptop running XP. I use this port often in the field with portable USB3 hard drives for images. The USB3 expresscard works great. The Transcend reader was quickly detected and the SanDisk card mounted quickly. Unfortunately, HDTune reported errors when scanning the card and was unable to perform a speed test on the Transcend reader because of errors.

I replaced the Transcend USB 3.0 reader with a Lexar USB2 reader on the XP laptop, inserted the SanDisk card and ran the HDTune tests on the card. On USB2, HDTune found no errors on the SanDisk card and reported a sustained speed of 19.1MB/s. The SanDisk card did not have errors. The problem on the USB3 port was the Transcend reader.

I visited the Transcend website, found there was new firmware and updated the reader to the new firmware. Stupidly, I repeated the above tests. The new firmware made no difference. I returned the reader to Amazon. I hope this will encourage Transcend to improve their quality. My experience has made me wary of all Transcend products. I don't have time to debug their mistakes.
