Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This slim volume consists of four essays, each devoted to a major American contemporary artist: Segal, de Staebler, Johns, and Christo. The author's intent is to "explore theological perceptions of such art where transcendence is expressed and experienced with the human body." This is achieved by a careful "reading" of a wide range of each artist's works supplemented by extensive quotations from the artist and by the insights of theologians and philosophers. The artists' divergent religious beliefs and approaches to their work add to the book's interest. Adams's analysis and visual understanding of the artworks is solid, though his discussion of transcendence and its relationship to the human body tends to be vague. Also, several artworks discussed in the text are not illustrated. Still, this book's unique approach to the religious character of contemporary art will make it important in specialized art or religion collections. Public and small college libraries will want to stick with the broader treatments of the subject found in Art, Creativity, and the Sacred , edited by Diane Apostolos-Cappadona (Crossroad, 1984) and Art as Religious Studies , coedited by Adams and Apostolos-Cappadona (Crossroad, 1987).
