Book Description

January 8, 2008
This intimate book of photographs follows the inspiring journey of twenty orphans who overcame tremendous hardships to form a dance troupe and become cultural ambassadors for their troubled country. They have brought their intense energy and joy to audiences across the U.S. over the past ten years, which has resulted in their support of more than 700 orphans in Uganda. Rising from the extreme poverty and devastation wrought by AIDS and civil war in Uganda to receive standing ovations while touring the best theaters in the U.S., these exceptional children bring good news from Africa.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Douglas Menuez's vision is full of caring and humanity. His sincerity and compassion are genuine. TRANSCENDENT SPIRIT is a superb and moving look at the resilience of the human soul seen through the eyes of one of the world's great image makers."
-- Douglas and Francoise Kirkland

"Africa's kids are some of the world's great heroes. This book gives them their due."
-- Spencer Reiss, former Southern Africa bureau chief, Newsweek

"Great photographs broaden the mind and touch the soul -- and that is exactly what Transcendent Spirit does."
-- Gerd Ludwig, Photographer of the Year, 2006 International Photography Awards

"When you look through the pages of Transcendent Spirit you realize that this is what photography was invented for. Douglas Menuez's images have the power to take you to worlds you have never known, introduce you to people you have yet to meet, and make you care about them. Words could not do that; video could not do that. The transcendent spirit requires a transcendent medium to adequately portray the scale of its tragedies and triumphs. The still camera in the hands of a superb craftsman can, and Menuez has done so with a grace and sensitivity that dignifies not only his subjects, but humanity itself."
-- Peter Howe, author Shooting Under Fire, and Paparazzi, former Director of Photography, LIFE Magazine, former Picture Editor, New York Times Magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive & Moving, October 28, 2007
This review is from: Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda (Hardcover)
A gorgeous book. The photographs are beautifully composed and convey a sensitivity to these kids that is moving. The work is often reminiscent of the masterful human interest photography of Gordon Parks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A major achievement!, November 29, 2007
This review is from: Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda (Hardcover)
This book is an amazing photoessay depicting the title - transcendence of spirit above diversity. I shamelessly copied one of the images and made it a part of my daily environment...

This is NOT a coffee-table book - it is worth studying!
