This incredible teaching on the Wisdom Section of Shantideva's A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life has been meticulously translated by B. Alan Wallace with the additional bonus of an oral commentary by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It does assume some background in Buddhist philosophy on the part of the listeners, and that particular section can be challenging, but this is a very clear elucidation and this updated edition is a key work for Buddhist scholars. - Mandala Editor's Choice (This incredible )

More About the Author

Trained for ten years in Buddhist monasteries in India and Switzerland, Alan Wallace has taught Buddhist theory and practice in Europe and America since 1976; and he has served as interpreter for numerous Tibetan scholars and contemplatives, including H. H. the Dalai Lama. After graduating summa cum laude from Amherst College, where he studied physics and the philosophy of science, he earned a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford University.

He has edited, translated, authored, or contributed to more than thirty books on Tibetan Buddhism, medicine, language, and culture, as well as the interface between religion and science. He teaches in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is launching one program in Tibetan Buddhist studies and another in science and religion. His published works include The Bridge of Quiescence: Experiencing Buddhist Meditation), Choosing Reality: A Buddhist View of Physics and the Mind, and Tibetan Buddhism From the Ground Up.

Based on an oral teaching that the Dalai Lama gave in Switzerland, and expertly translated into English, edited, and annotated by Buddhism expert B. Alan Wallace, Transcendent Wisdom is a commentary on the "Wisdom" chapter of the classic Buddhist text "A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life", one of the most important sources for the Mahayana branch of Buddhism. A precise, point-by-point discussion of core Buddhist tenets, chapters of Transcendent Wisdom include "Personal Identitylessness", "The four applications of mindfulness", "Proofs of the absence of true existence", and much more. An excellent and eminently accessible addition to modern Buddhist studies shelves, especially recommended to anyone intrigued by the teachings of the Dalai Lama.
