Book Description

Counselling in Action Series June 1994
SAGE celebrated the 20th Anniversary of "The Counselling in Action" in November 2008. 'This is a useful introductory book, which is particularly suitable for those in training. It is well structured and easy to read and includes excerpts from therapeutic exchanges to illustrate the points made' - "The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy". 'A useful resource for counsellors wishing to improve their efforts at transcultural counselling' - "New Therapist". The second edition of this clear and practical guide is designed to help counsellors and professional helpers give effective, sensitive and appropriate support to clients from cultures other than their own. Patricia d'Ardenne and Aruna Mahtani illustrate the process of transcultural counselling using the contrasting case studies of four different clients, and highlight the impact of cultural issues at individual, community and global levels. Counsellors are encouraged to recognize the importance of life experiences for their work, and to think about ways of using their own skills and resources more flexibly in response to different cultural needs.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'A useful resource for counsellors wishing to improve their efforts at transcultural counselling' - New Therapist 'I found I enjoyed this edition because of the political analysis that the authors pose, and the understanding that racism and particularly institutional racism, do still occur and "that change will only happen if we all act more proactively...training bilingual counsellors and promoting anti-racism in the workplace. In the wider world, counsellors have a responsibility to advocate best practices for diverse communities"...it is a treasure trove for anyone interested in understanding the complex issues or working with and across cultures. The dynamics, patterns and interactions Roger Herring describes are relevant to working with diverse ethnic groups in this country' -RACE 'A useful resource for counsellors wishing to improve their efforts at transcultural counselling.' - New Therapist 'It is a very practical and helpful book on transcultural counselling illustrating that cultural and racial understanding are an essential requirement for counselling practice' - Transcultural Psychiatry

i could say a million wanky things about this book...but that would be unfair to its integrity, and wouldnt do justice to how it effects you when you read it.it has a fatalistic poignancy and originality that makes your brain develop a different pace of thinking, where everything and nothing is of importance. someone else called it a little too sad, but i think its strength lies in its ability to be both painful and enlightening (alright alright so i went wanky anyway but i couldnt help it!).truly memorable, and i kid you not, ive read it six times!
