With Transcultural Nursing: Assessment and Intervention, 5th Edition, you can easily find specific assessment and intervention strategies for clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Divided into two parts, part one provides a systematic model of nursing assessment and intervention which takes six cultural phenomena into account: communication, space, social organization, time, environmental control, and biological variations. Part two applies these six cultural phenomena to the assessment and care of individuals in specific cultures. This user-friendly assessment tool is an outstanding resource for improving client care. Plus, this new edition includes all-new NCLEX® examination-style review questions, updated research and census data, and an increased emphasis on genetic and biologic variations.
  • Authors Giger and Davidhizar's innovative Transcultural Assessment Model, with a full chapter devoted to each of the six aspects of cultural assessment, helps you address specific assessment and intervention strategies for clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • Case studies and critical thinking questions at the end of each chapter help you apply the assessment framework in practice.
  • Discussions of spiritual components throughout, with an emphasis on various religions, address this important topic in transcultural care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a boring class!, May 10, 2011

This review is from: Transcultural Nursing: Assessment and Intervention, 5e (Paperback)
I myself did not really enjoy the Cultural Nursing class I had to take as a part of my BSN courses. However, this book is chock-full of information that can be used in daily practice. There is also more information offered online on the book's website. It will make a great reference book for when I care for those patients and families who are from a different cultural background!

1.0 out of 5 stars NO INK!!! in study guides, January 21, 2012

I don't want to pay top dollar for study guides worked in ink. I want to be able to answer the questions. While the book is in great condition the answers are in permanent ink defeating the purpose of the study guide!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text, October 23, 2011

This review is from: Transcultural Nursing: Assessment and Intervention, 5e (Paperback)
In a world that is rapidly becoming more globally integrated by the hour, it is increasingly important that nurses are culturally aware of the differences immigrant patients bring to the table. This textbook is a notable text that will introduce you to some of the remarkable variables of other cultures. From an American perspective, with regard to many cultures we are separated by far more than just a language barrier -- our entire world view can be dramatically different. This volume will help you understand our differences better and give you practical therapeutic solutions for bridging cultural chasms.

Make no mistake, for each people-group presented (spanning the globe) the text merely scratches the surface of the cultures' complexities. Each culture study could cover its own 700+ page volume, I'm sure. However, you will be better equipped to provide culturally competent and relevant care after reading this text. It is well-organized and information is easy to reference. Regarding my professional background, I work in a Level 1 Trauma Center in a major metropolitan hospital, where we have daily contact with patients speaking a wide variety of languages. In each section, I've discovered some eye-opening gems of detail that really help fill in the gaps of my understanding in areas where I'd had trouble making connections with a particular people group.

If you're looking for an excellent introduction to a wide variety of cultures and how they relate to nursing care, this is a superb text. I highly recommend it.

(As a supplement, I would recommend a couple of exemplary studies of the rift between cultures, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and God Grew Tired of Us.)
