5.0 out of 5 stars
a pleasant well-written romance, May 13, 2011
The story: basically the hero in his youth chose the wrong person to marry.
The heroine (younger than the hero) ran off to her father, who was in the
military, where she did many acts of great kindness, e.g., digging out musket
balls from soldiers that the surgeons ignored after triaging then into the
category of likely not surviving. The story starts six-years later when the
heroine returns to her father's estate. The heroine's father is dead and she is
independently wealthy. The hero owns the neighboring estate. After many
twists and turns everything turns out well for the hero and heroine.
There are a number of likeable characters besides the hero and heroine, e.g.,
there is a nice romance in the background between the heroines friend and the
owner of another neighboring estate.
The heroine is quite solid and human. I like that the heroine has a spine and
does not melt into a quivering defenseless puddle when the hero touches her
hand (as happens in too many romances). Altogether this is a very pleasant
four-and-a-half star read.
