Excerpt from the opening pages...
Prelude with the Author
If you've read from page one, then you've covered the reviews (I'm
very thankful for these wonderful words!), acknowledgments (I
hope I didn't leave anyone out), and an amazing foreword by Ralph
Marston. Ralph Marston, The Daily Motivator, in my book, can you
But before you go any further, I just wanted to say something.
Let's pretend the two of us have run into one another and you've
informed me you're getting ready to read my book. If we spent a few
minutes discussing what you're about to read, here's what I would say:
This isn't a typical how-to type of weight loss book. I spent my
childhood growing into the habits and behaviors contributing to my
morbid obesity, and then I spent nearly twenty years of adulthood--
near, at, or above 500 pounds. To better understand the dynamics
involved, it was necessary to start at the beginning. This analytical
exploration has been a critical element in embracing my personal truth
and was what I needed to do in order to really break free. Again, this
isn't a typical weight loss book.
If you want, you could skip to the last part of the book and
experience more of a how-to type of explanation. But something
important to remember is this: To fully understand the philosophies
and approach that worked for me, the entire story is relevant. It is my
story, my methods, my way. And you may or may not relate to or find
my approach to be doable for you, and that's fine. We're all different,
yet the same in many ways. One thing is certain, there are many
successful paths to freedom. In this book, you just might find some
similarities between us. And in those similarities, you could possibly
gain clarity toward your own road out of whatever is holding you back
from what you truly desire.
You may have found this book listed under "weight loss," or "selfhelp,"
or "health," because it's about me and my experiences. But it's
not only about weight loss. The recipe for freedom from my food
addiction and compulsive or emotional eating, and the resulting
obesity, is a recipe that can be adapted to fit you and your situation.
When I speak or write about "choosing change before change chooses
it's certainly not exclusively about weight loss. It's about living
the life you passionately desire and making the choices that put you in
the best position to achieve those dreams.
I've always been a dreamer and I've always been fascinated by
irony. In my wildest dreams, I never once imagined my morbidly
obese life could be turned inside out, and now, the very thing
determined to kill me, has transformed into a passionate desire to
spend the rest of my life shining a light on a road many of us travel.
Thank you for taking the time to read the next thirty-six chapters. I
hope you'll share your thoughts with me afterward when we run into one

Are you ready? The next exit is chapter one. Happy travels. . .
