Editorial Reviews

Review

"Clearly written, closely reasoned, and thought-provoking... What King shows in this work are the gradual, and by no means regular, transformations of medical thinking from those associated with the 18th century to those of the 19th century." -- Journal of the American Medical Association

A central theme of this book is the difficulties that clinicians had classifying diseases before the advent of laboratory medicine in the late 1800's. Along the way the reader watches the turmoil that prevailed in American medicine and the slow progress toward a true profession.

This is a book for the student of the history of medicine, especially the formative changes that took place during the 1800's. As such a student I found the book well written and fascinating.
