Transformers Animated Voyager - Grimlock

This is a great toy, in Dinosaur mode and Robot form. One problem I find is that the right heel does not snap in as tightly as I would have, in robot mode. Other than that, it is a great figur for collectors and children.

p.s. The asking price here on amazon is way too much, DO NOT get ripped off by these third party dealers. I found my figure at TOYS'R'US for $19.99.

So, when images of the Transformers Animated series and toys began to trickle into the media, I was not impressed. I mean, I remember watching the original cartoon when I was 6, and fondly remembered Beast Wars. This show just seemed wrong. Then I saw images of Grimlock, and was genuinely amused. He's by far the cutest T-rex you'll ever see, and his overbite jaw just about has be hearing "hurr hurr hurr." Anywho, onto the review!

Let's start with the good......

Firstly, I actually really like the colors on this guy. They're rich, detailed, and bright, without some being excessively bright. This is actually universal to the series, and I'm so very pleased, considering some of the toys from previous lines seemed inordinately brightly colored. He also look about as close to the character designs in the show as it could ever hope to be. It's obvious the engineers really worked to make him (and everyone in the line actually) look just like how they do on the show. It's impressive.

Secondly, his articulation, and balance is quite robust. His arms and legs have numerous points of articulation, allowing him to assume poses that the 1980's Grimlock toy could only ever dream of assuming. There's certainly plenty of opportunity to just tinker with him in either mode. He's also very well weighted, with a satisfying "quality" feel to how heavy he feels. His balance is also impressively sturdy, which is surprising since he looks terribly top heavy. His feet are nicely sized, and support all but the most absurd of poses.

Now onto the bad...

Firstly, his joints range anywhere between amazingly loose, and lockjaw tight, right out of the box. Clearly Hasbro hasn't completely forgotten the virtues of ratchet jointing, but they only seem to use it when it appeals to him. Both his arms and legs contains rotational joints so loose, you'd think you could blow on them, and they'd move. Thankfully it doesn't hurt his stability when on a hard surface, but when holding him he feels a bit floppy. Interestingly, this seems to be a problem throughout the entire line, which is both disappointing and frustrating.

Secondly, and I honestly find this nearly unforgivable, this arms during transformation are terrible. One one step you have to slide them up into the shoulders of the toy and it just.....doesn't.......HAPPEN! Then, once you've applied enough force to strip a lug nut from a car tire, it finally yields. To make matters worse, it actually split the shoulder shell seams on my figure. This is a glaring construction error. Apparently it doesn't happen with ALL Grimlock figures, but it happens with mine.

Thirdly, as per Hasbro's trend, the transformation directions are written in some sort of moon language yet discovered by earth. After a while I set them aside, and decided to go in alone. To far better results. What's annoying is that he's NOT a complicated figure, so how in the world did they manage to complicate the directions?

All in all, I do like his figure, and I'd argue he's one of the best in the line, but that's kind of disappointing when you consider how many problems he has. Most children will becoming exceedingly frustrated by the arm transformation problem, and his loose joints will also be discouraging. Still, he is fun, so I'll give him a favorable recommendation, just understand what you're getting into first.

Grimlock is one kick-ass Dinobot!I still have my original G1 Grimlock and this version is still just as good.One thing that is better is the size with Grimlock being about twice the size of the original.The detail on this bad boy is very good for an animated transformer with working claws and a nice looking chest piece in robot mode.The Dinobots are three of the better quality transformers in the animated line.Grimlock has some sweet features as well with snapping jaws in T-Rex mode and a flaming sword to where the flames pop right out of the sword with a push of the button on the handle.The sword also has a removable jet of fire breath for a realistic touch.The T-Rex mode is very realistic with great detail like it came right out of the screen.The poseability is outstanding with great stability for creating battle scenes or unique poses for displaying where you please.The durability is excellent as well with secure joints and a solid build in either robot or T-Rex mode.The transformation level is advanced meaning if you have plenty of experience with transformers there is mid-level difficulty.If you are a parent buying for a child of 5-6 or younger you might have to help some in the process.Grimlock has a very versatile transformation that can be learned by most ages with practice.If you are a Dinobot fan this is a must have.Bottom line Grimlock is a well-made,high quality,10 out of 10 transformer all fans can enjoy.I highly recommend Grimlock to all transformer fans and collectors out there.Grimlock Rocks and Transformers Rule!!!

Fun toy, reminiscent of the old one from when I was a kid, just more robust. Almost transforms the same.

I recently purchased Grimlock and Snarl for my son, age 4. Eventhough he can not yet change them himself, from robot to dinosaur and back, he and I still enjoy playing together. He also got an Optimus Prime, recent movie, that is totally impossible to transform. But these animated versions of the dinobots are easy and more enjoyable.

I'm a big fan of the Dinobots,as they were among my favorite Animated figures.I like Grimlock best because he has his G1 personality (not to mention speech patterns).I really love the toy too.The T-Rex mode is much more sleek than the original bulky thing that was G1 Grimlock.The jaws open and close,but sadly,the sword does not fit in his mouth,despite what the package says.I don't understand why people complain when they say he doesn't fit together well.On mine every thing fits snugly.The robot mode is great,and it looks a lot like G1 Grimlock.His posability is limited,which is a problem,and the pop out flames on his sword doesn't work that well,at least on mine.If I could change one thing about him,I would definatly give him a biceps joint.But other than that,he's a very nice figure,looks great next to the other 2 Dinobots and,best of all,he has a sword!!!So darn cool!!Don't believe the other reviews saying this guy is bad.He's really one of the coolest Animated figures.

I have this toy, ever since I bought it it falls apart.The legs come off when you transform it to Dinosaur mode it will not snap together. Don't waste your money on this product unless you are planing to throw him away. It is the cheapest toy ever built. It says on the box as strong as megatron him self. I think he is no stronger than an ant. Don't be like me and by this $24 item. Its really worth about $2.

Seriously why would you want Transformers that look so "babyish" for lack of a better word. My friend's son is 7 and he feels he is too old for these and wants Transformer Universe toys instead. Support cool toys rather than these jokes.
