4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy companion, June 28, 2007
This review is from: Transformers: Animated Movie Adaptation (Transformers (Idw)) (Paperback)
Whether or not you have seen the 1986 "Transformers: The Movie," this is a worthy addition to your comic book collection. In fact, you might even enjoy it a bit more if you haven't seen the movie.

Don Figueroa's artwork is, as always, both beautiful and striking. It perfectly captures the darker style of the movie while still incorporating it into glossy comic form. Figueroa's work alone makes this book a must-have for any Transformers fan.

Unfortunately, Bob Budiansky's talents as a writer are mostly wasted here. Because the majority of the dialogue is taken directly from the film (which is a good thing), Budiansky is relegated to creating exposition, informing those unfamiliar with the story (or even the individual issues within this collection) of the general plotlines. For anyone familiar with the movie, this soon becomes tedious and slightly annoying. (I ended up simply skipping over these boxes). It is certainly not enough to detract from the comic overall, but it would have been nice if IDW had a bit more faith in their readership's Transformers knowledge. The climactic battle both occurs and ends rather too quickly, but that is simply the nature of comics (especially a short four-comic run, as this one is). Budiansky does an admirable job, though, of bringing over as much as possible from the movie without ever making the story feel crowded or convoluted.

All said and done, Budiansky brings over the most important events and lines, and thanks to Figueroa's fantastic artwork, you can literally hear the voices of the characters on the page. There are minor additions to the comic that do not impact the overall story, but Transformers fans will be excited to see some more of their favorite characters. If you are a fan of The Transformers, or if you want to be, this comic should be in your collection.

And if you don't own The Transformers - The Movie (20th Anniversary Special Edition)...you should.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, but a little lacking., September 9, 2007

I have loved IDW's Transformers series so far, and this translation of the original movie to comic form is very well done. Everything is there, plus a few extra moments. Yet the comic feels a bit machine-made. Perhaps because I know the story too well, but it seems sticks a little /too/ well to the movie. Though it would have been nice to have them change it a bit, perhaps it is for the better than they just left the story alone.

All in all, a very good translation of the original movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Transformers artist today teams up with the original comic writer for a nice re-telling of the 1986 animated classic!, October 6, 2011

Definitely a beautiful book, as we see the current best Transformers comic book artist team up with the writer of the original Marvel Comic (and creator of most of the most iconic Transformers names and functions!) to bring you a nice re-telling of this classic 1986 animated film that bridged the 2nd and 3rd seasons of the original television series (Transformers: The Complete Series (25th Anniversary Matrix of Leadership Edition)) together.

The movie itself (The Transformers - The Movie) is so wonderfully animated, that even one of the best comic artists that I know of could only match it and not surpass it. Beautiful book to look at for sure. Seeing what the notably absent Omega Supreme and the Combiner/Gestalt teams were up to during the movie was a needed add-in, fun to behold, and one of the biggest reasons I purchased this book (that and the art), although I wished that they clarified that whole "Thundercracker-became-Scourge but did Skywarp-or-an-Insecticon-become-Cyclonus?" thing for once and for all.
