3.0 out of 5 stars To much trouble
I've waited since the late 80's for a good unicron to be made and I am still waiting. When transforming this goliath into planet mode it falls apart easily and has many parts that will easily be lost in a young childs hands.

This was my first Transformers toy. But from what I've seen, it's pretty cool! Unicron looks great in robot mode, but a little unusual in planet mode. It's not a big deal, unless you go nuts at the sight of an object that isin't round, but is supposed to look like a planet! I'm not a Transformers collecter, but I have to say this is pretty cool! If you buy this for a little kid though, Make sure they don't make any "rude gestures" with the hands. One of the best things about it is that it does NOT have many small pieces to lose. Although it costs alot,(and takes FOREVER to unpack), it's worth the money! Plus All the kids on my block love it! So, to rap it up Unicron is a great toy!

Unicron is one of the biggest, baddest, and coolest transformers out there. He makes a great addition to any collection or is a great transformer to start your collection with. Both of his modes are awsome and both have their own special features. If you like transformers or want to get involved with transformers than this is the toy for you.

I just got started building my Transformers collection (something I've been threatening to do since my Freshman year of high school,) so Unicron was one of the first figures I got.

I wasn't disappointed. Unicron is super posable and has more gimmicks than you can shake a fusion cannon at--or a stick, anyway.

My only gripe is that he's very difficult to transform--Hasbro wasn't lying when they gave him an "expert level" rating of 4 on their Transformation difficulty scale. Children are going to have a hard time with Unicron, both because he's so difficult to change into a planet and because he's just too big for smaller hands. Collectors, however, will be thrilled.

It boils down to this: if you're a collector, then you need one. If you're buying this for a child under 8 or so, you might want to give this one a second thought.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bad looking planet, but who cares?!?, October 13, 2003

This review is from: Transformers Armada UNICRON 15" Action Figure with DEAD END Mini-Con (2003 Hasbro) (Toy)
Unicron is a toy that looks bad in one form, but fantastic in the other. fortunately, Hasbro picked the right half to have a great design. The robot Unicron is quite possibly the greatest-looking Transformer ever (even better than the forth-coming Optimus Prime, IMHO). Every detail from the original movie is there, right down to the bat-like skeletal wings. Its durable, built with a combination of hard and soft plastics, and has extremely flexible hands, each finger joint capable of bending and holding its form, allowing it to hold a Mini-Con.

On the negative side, the planet leaves much to be desired. I suppose the designers had to sacrifice a perfect planet in exchange for a perfect figure, but the thought of having a hangable Unicron Planet would have been pretty cool. Also, for being a huge robot, there's a serious lack of Mini-Con junction points. One on each shoulder, and one on each leg are the only decent points to display the 'Cons, and it would have been nice to have a few on the arms.

Otherwise, if you can afford it, BUY THIS TOY! Your kids will love it, and if you're a fan of ANY transformers, from G1 to Armada, this is the toy you've been waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars For collectors and kids alike., September 29, 2003

This review is from: Transformers Armada UNICRON 15" Action Figure with DEAD END Mini-Con (2003 Hasbro) (Toy)
For any of you long time Transformers fans, the Unicron action figure has been on our wish list from Hasbro since the Transformers movie. First off for the collectors: This is a beautiful display piece. It's color, detail and textures are wonderful. The body articulates into any conceivable action pose. Though I think you will be disappointed in how the toy is displayed in the original box, assembly IS required, you'll see. Unlike the transformers from the days of yore, you don't have to worry about adding stickers or keeping track of weapons pieces, every part is included and used in the transformation.
Now for the kids (and you parents): This is a terrific toy. The first thing the kids will love is the size, light up eyes and hand, and the ominousing look of this villain. The first thing you parents will love is that IT DOES NOT MAKE ANY NOISES! No "blips" or "sirens" to haunt your book reading, football watching or car trips. You may occasionally be hit by child sniper fire, as the leg missile launchers are quite powerful and accurate. Enjoy.
Unless your child is fairly good at solving puzzles (remember the Rubix cube parents?), he or she may not be able to transform this colossus on their own. Good news is that the large joints are pretty bullet proof, and the smaller joints are built with a "break away" safety joint that can be "popped/snapped" back into place. I nice design feature when considering the investment into this particular toy ($49.99 + shipping).

Now the bad news. The instructions are very unclear as to releasing the locking mechanism that holds the shoulder joint onto the body in robot mode. As part of the transformation from "robot" to "planet", you must disengage the shoulder joints from the main torso (as per instructions #10). First, don't worry about the wings and "planet surface" pieces, they are made to pop off or be removed. I recommend the first time you attempt this to go ahead and remove them (as per instructions #1). You'll notice a small hole at the back of the shoulder joint where the wing joint can move flush against the shoulder. Don't be fooled by this, there is no way to poke, prod, or otherwise "jimmy" the joint lock mechanism. The only way to disengage the shoulder joint is to firmly pull it in an out-down-and away motion. It may feel like it will snap, but the hooks inside the torso are springloaded. This is possibly the only design flaw in this toy.
If someone discovers a switch or button I have missed, please add its description with your product comments.

Have fun folks.

My son spent his own money on this... Even tho it is quite expensive he really wanted it. Its a great size transformer and can hold many of the mini-cons he already has (something that he likes very much!) The mini-con looks pretty cool too and has a neat transformation.

When my son first started getting transformers I was really afraid this would be another one of those toys he put together and either broke apart (like legos) or just sat there (like zoids). But this is a real *toy* he can play with... where as the legos are fun to build...and the zoids are very cool looking both are fairly fragile and come apart easily.

Transformers are pretty solidly built to not come apart and withstand real *playing*... He has quite a few and I havent had to throw out any becuase they came apart. The mini-cons are a great addition and fun in their own right (he has them set up on a shelf and will sometimes play with just the minicons)

Transformers are really fun for him (altho how he transforms them still eludes me :) They are great to own and fun to play with. This one is a great addition and is solidly built and a good size.

As a longtime Transformer collector and one whose sense of thrill from playing with them as a kid survives in many of the children I know now, I admit being anxious when Hasbro announced Unicron would make his toy debut in Armada. After all, it took them 17 years to find a way to bring this character from the 1986 'Transformers' movie to life as a toy. So was it worth the wait and the fifty bucks? You'd better believe it! True, Unicron isn't the biggest TF ever released, but at 16 inches in height as a robot, he comes pretty darn close (he towers over the rest of my collection!). Though I've yet to see if he can store 24 Mini-Cons as advertised, given how many storage areas Hasbro crammed into (and onto) him, I wouldn't doubt it one bit. And even though his transformation is graded at an Expert level, I found it surprisingly rudimentary compared to the other TFs in this line...you just fold his arms one way, his feet another, and in seconds you've got Planet Unicron! Hasbro obviously went to great lengths to ensure that this figure lived up to high expectations from both kids and adults, and where my money's concerned, they didn't disappoint. Now if I can only keep my little nephews from fighting over it...!

Unicron is possibly the most anticipated and sought after Transformers of all time. Since his debut in Transformers: The Movie, collectors world wide (myself included) have wondered whether or not this particular action figure would make its way to consumer market. Now that it has, my only advice to fellow Transformer collectors is to purchase it now, and purchase it while its inexpensive. Once Unicron goes out of production, he will fetch a hefty price on the secondary market (auctions, e-bay, etc.). I've already purchased one and I am considering purchasing a second one to display in my collector's case. You can't go wrong with this figure, except not to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destroy The Matrix!, November 24, 2003

This review is from: Transformers Armada UNICRON 15" Action Figure with DEAD END Mini-Con (2003 Hasbro) (Toy)
Unicron, is the most powerful and evil being in the galaxy. He shows allegiance to no one and uses lesser beings as slaves to serve his purposes. In "Transformers The Movie" Unicron rebuilt the Decepticon Leader Megatron into Galvatron to destroy the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, a module the Autobot leader carries in his chest. The Matrix had the ability, when opened, to destroy Unicron, which is just what happened when Rodimus Prime opened the Matrix and used its power to finish Unicron forever............or so we thought!

Unicron is back with a vengeance like never before as a fully articulated Transformer toy. In robot mode his eyes and hand light up with an ominous crimson glow. His hands are fully functional with the capability of crushing Mini-cons into dust particles. Plus he has a secret weapon that can be unlocked two ways. One way is to attach his Mini-con Dead-End to his back via the small peg on his back. Another way is to get the Air defense team, combine them into the Star Saber, and insert the handle into the hole behind his head just above the Mini-Con peg. He also has missile launchers on both legs which are Mini-con Activated. In addition, he has compartments in his arms, stomach, and legs to trap Mini-con slaves. In planet mode he has working chompers capable of eating planets for snacktime. He can hold up to 23 Mini-cons on his huge ring.

This is the coolest Transformer in my collection. I use him for Armada and Generation One because he looks accurate. But he's not size accurate but that's understandable. If he was in scale to the other Transformers, he probably wouldn't fit in New York City. He's just the right size for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars After 16 years, here he is, August 31, 2003

This review is from: Transformers Armada UNICRON 15" Action Figure with DEAD END Mini-Con (2003 Hasbro) (Toy)
I decided to splurge on Unicron so I wouldn't be tempted to buy any others for a while. Having fully checked the toy out, I do not regret my decision at all (unlike with, say, Optimus Prime).

Some people are disappointed that Unicron isn't on more of a planetary scale... I think it's fine as is, because if it were bigger it would just be unwieldy, especially since it just turns into basically a big ball rather than a battle station like all the other huge Transformers in the past. The technical reason for the size is that toy safety standards have changed since the 80's - that's also why they couldn't re-release Fortress Maximus for the Robots in Disguise line. Speaking of which, Unicron comes up to about Fort Max's elbows.

It's always hard to make a good-looking Transformer that turns into a sphere (as evidenced in the Minicon, Dead End), so some sacrifices were made in the planet mode to keep the look of the robot mode faithful to the original design. But it still all looks pretty cool, right down to the planet's ring that turns into skeleton-like wings for robot mode - and the ring is covered with Minicon-holding posts, so you can put all your Minicons on there and still feel like you need to buy more. I actually wish there had been more posts on the arms and legs too; there's certainly room.

Pros:
- Design is faithful to the original; how often do you see a toy planet that actually looks cool?
- Holds a ton of Mini-cons, though that's almost entirely on the ring
- Individually articulated fingers
- Fun chewing action in planet mode

Cons:
- In planet mode, the round indentation intended to hold the Minicon doesn't work well because the post isn't thick enough, so it keeps falling out. This is made worse by the wings' tendency to pop apart in planet mode ("wings" refers to the shell-like pieces that complete the planet's round shape).
- The chest cannon is a cool effect, but the mechanism is a bit annoying. It's triggered by attaching a Minicon to Unicron's back, but instead of an attach-and-push switch like on the leg missiles, it's triggered by merely attaching the Minicon, and then the spring pushes the Minicon back off again. The other big problem is that it seems the chest won't stay closed unless the missile is in the cannon, which will get very annoying if you lose the missile.
- The robot mode's skeleton-wings don't say positioned well, especially when loaded down with Minicons.
- Could have been made to fit even more Minicons.
