This review is from: Transformers Beast Wars C-31 Stampy (Toy)
This figure is based on a character from one of the Japanese-made sequels to the North American-made Transformers: Beast Wars (or "Beasties" for Canadian fans). The packaging and instructions are entirely in Japanese, but pictures should help those who need a hand with the relatively simple transformation. The character has three "modes" of transformation, and I will review each:
Mode 1, "Rabbit": This is the form that the toy is packaged in, a white and grey rabbit or hare. All four legs can be moved to pose the figure, although the unusual length of the hind legs may make realistic posing awkward. The ears are also somewhat posable, swept back or standing at attention as the owner desires. The animated series and manga associated with this character (Beast Wars Neo) suggest that he is a member of an entire race of transformers with rabbit modes, having been born or created in this form, rather than it being a deliberate choice as in other Transformers media. Mode 2, Robot: Petite and very posable, Stampy's robot mode is a well-made figure roughly the same proportions as an 80s-90s GI-Joe figure. The jaws of the rabbit become part of the hand structure, allowing this toy to be posed with some weapons or tools, although this may not be intentional. The design is original and visually appealing, and the transformation to this mode is mostly intuitive. Be sure to clip the arms to the tabs on the side of the torso! Mode 3, Weapon: A bizarre third mode exists in which this figure may be turned into a weapon which many larger Transformers may wield by way of a peg on the figure's belly (unfortunately located above the crotch, friends have made some vulgar jokes at Stampy's apparent "anatomical accuracy"). By pushing on the "tail" from Mode 1, the figure's robot-mode arms move together in a scissoring motion, implying that the rabbit ears are somehow sharp enough to make this a threat. Overall, this figure shows many of the quirks of design that make Japanese-designed Beast-era Transformers characters especially strange to Americans, but is a fun toy to have around both for display and play. The value is enough that toy customizers can afford to get one if they have something really unusual in mind. Not recommended for small children- the rabbit mode has blood red eyes and wide open jaws that make it seem like some sort of Monty Python nightmare bunny.
