IDW's collections of Transformers Classics UK are awesome.
Kristie
I love how they include the Transformers Universe profiles free, and some of the Robo Capers were very funny.

This is it, the beginning of the best period of the whole UK comic. This volume is so awesome I don’t know where to start. Let’s begin by comparing this to the volumes I previously reviewed. The first one was great, the second one wasn’t as good as the first but still above average, & the fourth was the best of the first 3 I reviewed, but this one is even better. There was only one story in here that wasn’t fantastic (The Gift), but that was still good (On a side note, anyone bothered by how they placed it after Distant Thunder instead of between Target 2006 & the other stories like it was originally printed? Way to ruin the flow of the series). Anyways, Simon Furman loved The Movie (as well he should because it was awesome), & it gave him a chance to play with a cast that with a couple exceptions would never be featured regularly in the US comic. Target 2006 was where it all began. I can’t really talk about it without repeating what was said in the introduction for the story. It features several plots going on at once, it features a ton of new characters, all of which play a significant part & they never feel shoehorned in, it’s just brilliant. Almost as brilliant is the following arc with the Predacons & Optimus Prime & Megatron returning to Cybertron, among other things. These stories also cement Outback’s status as my favorite of the 1986 Minibots. Aside from looking like Brawn (my favorite Minibot ever) he seems to be the only one with real screen time (in both the Marvel comic & the original cartoon, though I did like Pipes’ bit in the episode Forever Is A Long Time Coming & loved Tailgate’s appearance in the black & white story Underworld!). The 100th issue was especially good. Not necessarily my favorite story, but definitely worthy of being attached to the number.Read more ›

The solicitation text for this volume was created back when Ancient Relics was going to be included in Volume 3. The Action Force crossover was pushed ahead and was included, instead, in Volume 4.

That being said, however, this collection is still worthy for a Transformers fan. This volume features Target: 2006, a key story that many fans believe is the start of the golden age of Simon Furman's run on Transformers. It's the first story to feature the new characters in the then current Transformers: The Movie. These characters would prominently feature over the next 100 plus issues of the UK Transformers comic.

This collected volume is a great way for US Transformers comic fans who have only heard of these stories before to be able to read them for the first time. Because of Target: 2006, Volume 3 might actually be one of the better ones to start with. While the previous 2 volumes are also good choices, the stories within them are when Simon Furman was starting to settle into the role as the head writer. The earlier stories, while good, are not as good as, say, Target: 2006 and on.

IDW's collections of Transformers Classics UK are awesome. They are a must for any Transformers comics fan! The quality of the paperback and paper stock is good. The pages are not the glossy stock most comics and tpb's are the quality is still good and fits with the 80's style. But the extras are what make it worth it. Many times when a comic is reprinted and/or collected there isn't many extras included (except maybe cover reprints). So having in-depth articles, etc make it accessible for fans (such as myself) who wouldn't normally know all the cool little bits of info. and funner to read the stories because of it! The extras include in-depth articles with Simon Furman and others about the history of Transformers UK and each story. Plus there are adverts, covers and other bonus reprints.
