I was a Transformers fanatic as a kid and now work in the same profession as Grapple does, so I bought him for my desk at work. This is a terrific toy that looks sharp in both vehicle and robot modes. Best of all, this reissued version is virtually identical to the original 1980's version with just a few changes that, in my opinion, improve upon the original.
The few differences in appearance are that his eyes are now blue instead of yellow, his crane hook is now grey instead of chrome, and his Autobot symbol is now painted on instead of being a sticker. As with the original, Grapple's toy design is excellent because the functions of the truck carry over to robot mode. Even in robot mode, he can swing his extendable crane over and use it as he would in truck mode, which adds a lot of play value. However, this version's crane ratchets instead of moving smoothly like the original. Although some people might have problems with it, I think that the ratcheting design helps prevent the crane from becoming loose with use. For accessories, Grapple comes with a small rifle and some rockets that you can switch with his detachable hands. The original Grapple could launch his hands or rockets (very weakly), but as a result they ended up falling out very easily. This version is reworked so that the launching feature is gone and the hands and rockets just snap into place, which is an improvement. Grapple is built quite solid and durable. Unfortunately, like the original, there is is no leg articulation, but it really does not detract much at all from the toy. This is a terrific reissue of a classic. I highly recommend Grapple as an addition to any Transformer collection!

I got this toy for my son and he loves it. We have been collecting G1 Transformers for years as I loved them myself as a child. I owned the original version of this toy and as far as I can tell, it is an exact replica. The molding, stickers and paint look the same as the 80s version! I gave it a 5 on educational value because the process of transforming the toy will increase blood flow to the pre-frontal cortex of a child's brain and increase their brain power. There are very few toys that can do that nowadays.
These are very rare now and while I hope Takara or Hasbro starts releasing this G1 series again, you had better get them while you still can.

I finally got a character that is an architect. Who would know that 18 years after I saw Grapple on the cartoon series that I would be an architect too. I have the same feelings about building as being an artwork, like Grapple. I am glad that Hasbro is releasing the classic G1 transformers, but they should try and release more interesting characters, different design then the similar one.Oh man, the Autobots for the 6th commemorative series are all clone and redundant model of other characters. What is the different between Grapple and Inferno, beside one is a construction crane and the other is a fire truck, not much. One is red and the other is yellow. One has a crane and the other has a latter. They are really milking us and they know who the target market is. But, if you don't have Inferno, Grapple is also well designed, looks pleasing, and a great Autobot. He is maded mostly of plastic. He is very easy to transform and is one of the taller Autobot (5.5"to 6" in robot mode). His crane is functional and he can actually stand up. I recommend getting the earlier Commemorative Series model over Grapple. Grapple is a lot better then Rodimus Prime, I got the Taraka's Rodimus Prime and that is an awful design/toy. I live in S. California and I can get the Takara's Decepticon (Soundwave, Astrotrain), but it is even steeper.

I think that Grapple is great! I think that he is pretty durable because he once rolled down the stairs, and I found him in a jumble but there was not a scratch on him.Grapple is great for displaying and also pretty good for playing with.

This is a great figure for the G1 collector. I do NOT recomend this for kids! Only older people who will put it on a shelf after applying the stickers. It is a shame that Hasbro hasn't released more Decepticons, but, they can only release what Takara has released, plus, figures like Megs, Sixshot, & Soundwave can never come over, for various reasons(whether it be too expensive for Soundwave, or the gun modes for the other 2). We will be getting Dirge soon, & we will be getting Thrust & Ramjet as well, but, the con's haven't seen alot of releases in Japan. I'd like to see them do the Insecticons, Constructicons, Stunticons, Cyclonus, Scourge, Overlord(aka Gigatron in US), Seacons, the tapes, etc. Patience is a virute, so, we will make due with the great re-issue's we are getting, inluding Rodimus, & enjoy the new Alternator's line(which is a redux of G1!).

GRAPPLE IS A GREAT ADDITION TO THE ALREADY GREAT GENERATION ONE HASBRO REISSUE LINE. BASICALLY JUST INFERNO REPAINTED BUT THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENCES HERE TOO. INFERNO WAS A FIRE TRUCK AND THIS GUY IS A CRANE TRUCK. HAS A HOOK INSTEAD OF A LADDER. SAME FISTS MISSLES AND GUN AS INFERNO ALSO. A+ ADDITION KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK HASBRO.

Does Grapple look familiar? He should- he shares most of his parts (including the head) with G1 Inferno; therefore much of my review for Inferno also applies here. This isn't neccesarily a good thing. That means mostly plastic construction and flaky chrome. Grapple has an additional demerit in the fact that he replaces Inferno's tight, telescoping ladder with a crane that loosely moves in and out- meaning it just kind of hangs down in robot mode and does not keep its place in vehicle mode. Again, I'll have to say not to buy this or any other G1 reissue for anyone who isn't a collector due to fragility issues.

My 6 year old really wanted this for Christmas. We didn't know that the G1's are Generation One. That means they are the very first original transformers. Great for a collector, but not for kids. The G1's don't even come close to measuring up to the new transformers. They are very generic & you even have to put the decals on them.
Very overpriced & NOT for kids! |
