My 6-yr-old grandson got this as a gift - what fun he's having ! Reception is good, came with batteries installed for "out-of-the-box" operation. Seem pretty sturdy, good choice !

All the negative reviews of this toy are true. I thought maybe those people just had some bad models, but mine was worthless as well.

My two sons chose to combine their allowances to buy this as a shared toy--a nice gesture, I thought. Unfortunately, this was a total washout. The range seems to be about 15 feet (after that static overwhelms intelligibility), and limited to line-of-sight--even going slightly around a corner makes the message cut out. A complete waste; couldn't be more of a rip-off. I thought the Transformer folks would care at least a little about protecting the integrity of their brand, but I guess not.

More static than talk
We were hopeful these would be better walkie talkies than our last pair but that didn't turn out to be the case. There is really more static than talk.

Didn't work at all unless you were standing right next to each other!
My son got these as a birthday gift. They did not work at all. Even if you were standing right next to each other, they usually didn't transmit.
