I've followed the movie comics for Transformers for awhile now, and I can say that I was disappointed by this one. The chapters are sort of all over the place, and most of them left me with more questions that I had when I began. The dialogue was pretty contrived, when it was present at all (there was usually about five pages of dialogue followed by about fifteen of battle, which got pretty boring after awhile). There wasn't much relationship development or interaction between the characters (and am I the only one who thinks that Bumblebee sort of has a weird obsession with Sam?). The art was also a disappointment, because I've seen what these guys can really do. The humans were these ugly, indistinct little blobs, and a lot of the robots were squashed.

That being said, I think the one redeeming quality of the entire book was the chapter about Sideswipe. Most of my previous criticism doesn't apply here-it was entertaining, had the right mix of action and dialogue, and set up a really interesting apprentice-relationship between Sideswipe and Ironhide. So I'd recommend just buying that one on its own, and saving your money on the entire book. Hopefully the next installment will be better!

This book acts mainly as a prequel to the film. Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Jetfire, the Fallen and Arcee all have backstories in this book. Ravage's story is after the film but it has a confusing cameo from Soundwave in it. Bumblebee story is a little bit of a mess but the others are adequate enough fair. Overall a decent enough read as you get info on how the main players of Jetfire and the Fallen but not essential to understand the film.

I love the mythology behind the Transformers movie series, even if the movies are sometimes subpar. These books fill in the gaps.
