Well, "Transformers Classics" has arrived, and in its clever reimagining of classic Generation One characters with modern toy-making technology, it achieves something that has not been accomplished in the Transformers brand since 1984. Yep, that's right, the leader of the evil Decepticons is once more a handgun. A futuristic Nerf-looking handgun lacking any die-cast parts, mind you, but a gun nonetheless. Since regulations surrounding the manufacture of toy guns went all parental back in the mid-'80s, ol' Megs has been shuffled from a gun to a space cannon (G1 Galvatron), a tank (G2), a jet (Machine Wars), a reptile (Beast Wars), a dragon-man (Beast Machines), a something-or-other that changes into anywhere from six to ten different things depending on whether he's Megatron or Galvatron (Robots In Disguise), another tank (Armada), a gunship (Energon), a race car (Cybertron), and some weird alien fighter-craft-thing (the upcoming live-action movie). But now things are full circle, and Megatron once more has that nasty black fusion cannon astride his right forearm, like a fond reunion with a trusted old friend.
Now with all the nostalgia that Hasbro has pumped into the appeal of this line, there is a noticeable trade-off in Megatron's case. Manufacturing capability now allows for toys of G1 characters that enable them to greatly resemble their cartoon/comic counterparts, which is a far cry from the original G1 toy line. This Megatron's robot mode sports about as much resemblance to the cartoon/comic design model as the G1 toy did, but the difference here is that this new design lends itself much better to its transformation.
The transformation is average in terms of complexity as compared to all the other newer TF toy lines. It takes some practice to get down, but that is achieveable. The green on this figure's color scheme also takes a bit of getting used to, but it does have its benefits in terms of a tried-and-true action figure gimmick neatly incorporated into this line: light-piped eyes. Granted, a more nostalgic TF fan/collector would probably have preferred red eyes to match the character's animated incarnation (and modern comic versions), and this figure lacks the rubsign that the others in this line sport.
Apart from that, the only weakness in the figure is the flimsiness of its 'wings' after a couple transformations. This is typical of Transformers of such a design (usually referred to as "shellformers").
In closing: Classics Megatron is a great toy that offers both the proper sense of respect for the character's G1 roots and yet provides something with genuine play value, which is more than can be said for TF lines like Alternators.

I have this toy, and I wanted to say that I am glad that Megatron is a gun again, and I am not upset about the orange or purple. Hasbro had to meet specific legal requirements for a toy that resembles a gun and they did so with a minimal amount of uncharacteristic cheese.

That being said I also very much like his core robot mode. He is very menacing and his has very good poseability and balance. Also his transformation was the easiest one from any of the new Classics Transformers that I have yet to purchase.

My only gripe is really two part. One is his giant green wings. Megatron is a gun, not a bird and in this case not a jet place. He has no need of giant green wings. And they are described as "wings" on the packaging, although they really just look like the outside of the gun and not wings like those found on the much better conceived Classics Jetfire toy.

My second part of this complaint is that Megatron is not a true transformer. He is a glorified "Shell-Former." In case you have not heard the term before, a "shell-former" is a transformer toy in which the engineers took the easy way out, but hiding nearly all of the transformers robotic aspect behind large pieces of formed plastic. The Original Scourge and the Titanium edition Scourge is another example of a "shell-former."

When you pull apart the halfs of the gun shell, you see all the parts of Megatron fit together losely inside. It is easy to see where the parts go and form him into his robot mode and like I said his transformation was almost simplistic.

Also of all the transformers from the Transformers: Classics line this toy seems the least detailed. He has none of the original Megatron's chest detailing and none of the detailing you find on the other toys. I feel the lack of detail probably stems from the fact that most of the robot parts are hidden behind the plastic shells instead of viewable in both robot and vehicle mode like in the other toys. Its the vehicle details on a lot of the toys that make the robots look so good.

It saddens me that this toy was not as conceived as well as the rest of the toys in the Transformers: Classics line. Each one of them has been one of my favorites among my Transformer toys simply because of the incredible engineering put into them, that they transform so well, with so much detail and yet also are incredibly poseable.

Unfortunaly I find myself somewhat dissapointed with this figure from the Transformers: Classics line.

While I am not crazy about his gun mode, I absolutely love Megatron's robot mode. His head resembles the G1 cartoon version of Megatron. Some slight problems - Megatron's head seems pretty small compared to his body. The green color on his "wings" seems off with the rest of the figure. Also, lastly the orange on the end of his cannon is even more off than the green.

The purple is right on with his coloring scheme as Galvatron. Too bad Takara didn't use this color purple on the reissue of Galvatron rather than the light purple. Overall this figure is worth it if you want a robot version of Megatron. His gun mode is not so appealing, but the robot mode rules!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally...vintage Megatron (or at least close), January 11, 2007
This review is from: Transformers Voyager Classic Megatron Figure (Toy)
After all the years of seeing Megatron as everything from a tank to a dinosaur, it's good to finally see the Decepticon leader as a gun again like he should be, even if it's not the original gun version. The design is very well done in his gun and robot form and is reminiscent of classic G-1 look from the original cartoon series, especially with him having the cannon on his arm like the original. I'd even go so far as to say I like this Megatron figure better than the original one that came out in the 80s, which looked hideous in robot form unlike the cartoon.

This figure was slightly difficult to transform the first time around but it quickly got easier to do so, and I do wish his head was just a little bit bigger, but all in all this is a good purchase and a must have if you're a transformer collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Gun, December 19, 2006

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Transformers Voyager Classic Megatron Figure (Toy)
Awesome. I've never owned a version of Megatron even though my allegance has always been with the decepticons since I've had intrest in the series. From the beggining my favorite has been starscream, I decided It was time to own a version of the strongest spark that can be found in cybertron. I never liked his Lugar versions from the first consepts, and Always thought it was just stupid that he could just change size when he became a robot in the show. This year's Megatron is one of the best transformers Ive got, and my favorite version of him yet [including his Galvatron"tank" alter-ego, and T-rex Beast forms] He transforms from a gun again, but this time its a big chunky blaster with a scope instead of a lugar as originally. this allows for a much better look in robot form, with good movement and well placed joints, which is often the biggest problem with transformers. It surprized me how evened out his robot form is as compared to how contorted it has to be to form his gun mode. The only unsymmetrical point is his Gun's Giant scope doubles as a Giant Blaster for him in Robot form, it's built into him so he's all one very nice and complex piece. The sides of the gun become his wings, which are a little too heavy for him to stand striaght up with, that was about my ONLY problem with it. If your one who likes to figure them out without the instructions first [like me] it was easy to form him to robot after a little thought, then I was clueless how to get him BACK to gun mode [had to peek at the instructions]. in all I say his robot form is much cooler But his gun mode feels a little more useful as a second toy then the other cars and jets, collector or just getting into the series, this is definitly one you'll enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old Megatron has new digs, but are they worthwhile?, March 21, 2011

Despite my reservations, I finally decided to get Classics Megatron. He's a decent figure, but could have been done much better.

I'd read and viewed a ton of reviews on this guy online before buying him, and one of the two big problems I had was with his color scheme. Because of the US toy laws against him looking like an actual gun, Hasbro colored him up in light gray, purple, green and orange (the Japanese releases have him in the correct colors, though the United version looks much better than the Henkei version). Surprisingly, it doesn't look that bad in person, but it's still a turn-off. If you have the skills, repaint him in silver, black and red like he's supposed to be.

The other major annoyance is with his "wing kibble." It DOES look ugly, takes up 3-4 extra inches around him (when standing straight), and weighs the figure back. Again, you can cut a notch where it attaches to his rear and pull the whole thing out for display in robot mode (it plugs back in if you do it carefully), but that's something that should have been part of the figure to begin with.

Another strange problem is that his cannon is underslung in robot mode, so when he points it at those insufferable Autobots, his fist faces upside down. Why his fists weren't cast at another angle is a mystery, and the only way to fix it is to take them apart, cut them off the hinges and re-glue them facing the right way.

Aside from his balljointed head and hinge feet/heels, all of Megatron's joints are "ratchet" joints. This means that they click and stay in place, which is actually a plus on this figure (as it keeps him in his poses). The only thing missing is a turnable waist, but that's not a big deal.

Transformations is counter-intuitive; even with the instructions it's a pain to figure out, and annoying to get the parts to fit where you want them to. The end result isn't even really worth it, as his "Nerf Gun" appearance looks wonky (the colors look bad here) and barely feels like a gun (though the clicking trigger is kind of cool).

As I noted in the beginning, Classics Megatron isn't really a bad figure, and you can get him in cool poses with his fellow Decepticons (or facing off against Optimus Prime). Robot mode is what makes this figure, as the transformation is annoying and gun mode isn't worth the effort. I'm disappointed that they couldn't just do what Revoltech did, only on a bigger scale (and transformable, of course), but with the modifications I mentioned he can look much better. If you're going to buy him, don't spend more than 20 bucks; otherwise you're better off getting one of the Japanese versions.

First off let me say that this is a good toy. He has two solid modes and is a worthy representation to the G1 leader. That being said, I have some information for you. There is, on this very website, a megatron that costs less and gives you so much more! Takara classics megatron. He has the proper color scheme and light piping without those stupid orange pieces that are needed on toy guns. The real issue is that Takara's version now costs LESS THAN this one making it a clearly better buy!!!!! So go look up Takara classics Megatron and buy him before you get this lesser version.

I was so excited when I caught sight of this toy in the local toy store... finally, Megatron back as a gun. I've never been a fan of the tank, dinosaur, drag racer, alien jet, etc, etc modes that they've come up for the Decepticon leader but the gun transformation from G1 is what Megatron is best suited for.

Course, this gun mode looks pretty kiddish, but I didn't intend to keep him in gun mode anyway. I loved the robot-mode's look from the packaging and I decided I would keep him in that most of the time.

I'm pretty happy with the figure but a couple of things get on my nerves:-

- You can't move the arms or legs without 'em making a 'click-clack' sound. The slightest movement does not come silently. This is the first TF toy I've got (and I have Classics, Cybertron & Movie lines) that makes noises as you try to pose it.
- The position of the legs is such that Megatron is either standing with his chest 'puffed out' and looking up at the sky, or is stooping. Difficult to get the correct posture.
- When you remove the head from the chest compartment, the head sticks out a little too much, showing a 'neck', between the head and the ball-joint. It has a very ugly effect on Megatron, since he doesn't have a neck. I worked around this by not pulling the head out completly from its compartment and just pointing the head upwards a bit, so that the neck is covered and he's still facing straight.

Other than these quibbles, I think it's a great toy. Of course, I wish the colorings were different and I saw pictures of the Takara variant of the same toy and it's a lot more true to Megatron. I'm planning of doing a re-paint.

One of the best of the classic's line. I think my favorite thing about this toy is how it transforms. When I first saw it I couldn't see how the gun and robot modes were one and the same. It really is a marvalous feat of toy engineering. Highly recommended.
