War for Cybertron,

This review is from: Transformers: War for Cybertron (Video Game)
I had mixed feelings about this game before its release, but after doing some research I realised that this game is different from the previous Transformers games based on the movie...which is a good thing. Fans of Gears of War will really love this game. For hardcore shooter fans, some things may or may not disappoint you. Fans of the animated series will fall in love! It plays out a lot like a CG cartoon...sound quality is very good with the voiceovers being very good drawing you in even more. The graphics look like someone took Gears of War and replaced the COG and the Horde with the Autobots and Decepticons. I know, I know, the Unreal Engine has been done a million times, it does WFC a lot of good though. Although I mentioned Gears of War, keep in mind that there is no duck and cover system. At first, this sort of disappointed me in a way, but after playing it, I realized.....robots don't need cover!!! The game controls like a charm, but takes some getting used to as well. Another thing is, unfortunately sometimes (depending on how you have your controller layout) you will accidently transform when you didn't intend to do so. This can be a problem...especially when trying to navigate platforming sections. Transforming in mid-air not only looks cool, but it also can be used for strategy purposes as well. It is highly recommended that you play the Decepticons campaign first. You can however choose to play the Autobots campaign first if you like. I have not played the multiplayer yet nor have I tried the 3 player co-op so I will not comment on the MP aspect of the game in this review. This game is very fast paced with a ton of action in it so far. Again, if you are a fan of Transformers, this is the game to have..I am not sure how long the single player campaign is, but it seems to be pretty long. Most may want to wait till the price drops, but if you are really thinking of getting the game, do yourself a favor and pick it up. This review is based on the PS3 version of the game. I hope this was helpful to you.

War For Cybertron. Well what can I say about this except, this game totally blew me away. I'm going to start with the Campaign Mode this offers two unique stories and levels. I like Decepticon side because, I like being the bad guy trying to takeover, or you can be the usual good guy (Autobots) trying to save everything. But you don't have to be good or bad on your own, you can team up with 2 friends online and be good or bad together and destroy some really cool bosses. It takes place on their home planet Cybertron (a stunning mechanical-futuristic place) of course and the best part about it you're no longer big bulky semi-trucks, camaros and normal earth vehicles Autos and Decepts are Cybertronian vehicles which are the same as earth's except they look way better, cooler, meaner and tougher. Now for the best part of the game Multi-Player, this offers a variety of modes Escalation- constant groups of robots attack until the players are defeated, Free-for-All- is every robot for himself, and my favorite Deathmatch-is just like with other shooters two teams go head-to-head to get the most kills. The others are Power Struggle, Code of Power, Countdown to Extinction and Conquest, I won't spoil these for you but I think you'll enjoy them. The character customizing is absolutely awesome, players must make their own Transformer based on the 4 classes, which determines their vehicle form Scout (car), Scientist (jet), Leader (truck), and Soldier (tank) each vehicle functions the same except Scientists can fly. Each allows you two weapons, two abilities, and three upgrades each class has their own set of kill streak rewards, available weapons, and abilities and last but not least you choose the color scheme of your robot. Now for my review GAMEPLAY 5stars controls are great, very engaging and fast paced not for casual gamers, STORYLINE 5stars finally we get the Autos and Decepts history, GRAPHICS 5stars it sounds and looks great, MULTIPLAYER 5stars. Transformers: War for Cybertron 5stars it's absolute genius.

I read tons of reviews on this game before I got it. It seemed that in general most people said that it's an okay game but it's not the best ever. They then list reasons that it wasn't good. I just would like to say this game is awesome! It's too bad that it has such terrible reviews from everyone. If you like the 3rd persons shooter game type then this is a game for you. The multi-player is cool. There has been a lot of complaining about the levels being all the same but obviously that is just people complaining. The ability to transform adds an awesome touch to the multi-player. I always hate in game when I re-spawn and then I have to walk for 30 seconds to find anyone else. Well in this one if you are far away you can just transform into a vehicle and go and find some people. If your in danger you can transform and quickly flee the area. It adds a spin on the gameplay that other game has. I would also like to mention that the melee combat on this game is awesome. For all of you shooter game fans out there you all know that the melee can sometimes be lame in the games. But Imagine being a freaking transformer and swinging a death hammer at somebody. Or spinning in circles with and ax. It is an awesome game overall. I am not sure why people don't like it. I don't think that they have actually played it.
One thing that I have to agree on that is a little bit negative is that you definitely find yourself with a huge lack of ammo. So you have to use your melee attack a ton but it's pretty sweet too. If you are interested in buying this game I would definitely recomend it. It's not the best game ever but this is a good game.

Being a Transformers fan for quite some time I was thrilled to find that not only was a PS3 game for Transformers coming out, but it wasn't based off of the perverted and dark franchise that Micheal Bay created to destroy our childrens hearts. After playing this game, I feel that not only has the series redeemed itself in my heart, but has brought G1 to a whole new level. Very good graphics and excellent story, this game is perfect for those looking to remember when transformers was still awesome but also those trying to start a new hobbie altogether. If transformers is your childhood dream, this game brings it to a whole new level.

I grew up with the classic G1 Transformers cartoons, so I was very excited when Transformers: War for Cybertron was announced. There were high hopes that WfC would be this year's Batman: Arkham Asylum and bring the Autobots and Decepticons out of the video game purgatory that they have always been condemned to exist in. So does the game take us back to the 80's? Well...
First of all, the game looks and sounds great. The voice acting is excellent and certainly captures the feel of the original cartoon. The transformations and sound effects feel like they belong in this universe. It feels like the developers are genuine fans of the Transformers franchise and have taken the time and effort to recreate their world. When basic logic dictated that they make some changes (obviously having a robot that transformed into a gun or 80's tape deck wouldn't have made a lot of sense here) they did a good job, everything in this game feels like it belongs. There is no question that WfC is a labor of love. But once the nostalgia wears off, you have a mediocre 3rd person shooter that fails to separate itself from the rest of the crowd. The gameplay is neither good or bad, it's simply average. This might have been acceptable if not for the potential uniqueness that robots that can turn into vehicles should have been able to provide. I often found myself only transforming out of robot mode when I was low on ammo (a situation that happens way too often in this game), there simply isn't enough level design that encourages the player to become a vehicle. The jet levels are the obvious exception to this, but for whatever reason there are only two of these in the game. These levels were the highlights of the game and I would've liked to see more of them, it feels like we get a little taste and then have it taken away from us. In closing, I liked WfC but simply did not love it. If they can learn from their mistakes, High Moon Studios has the foundation of a solid franchise.

Bought the PS3 for this game,

This game is excellent. I'm a huge God of War fan & figured that GOW 3 would've been the game to finally get me to buy the PS3 but I was wrong. I got through the release of GOW 3 w/o feeling I had to buy the system but when I saw the previews for this game, I had to get it. I've had the system since this game came out & neither the system nor the game has disappointed me. After I beat Transformers, I bought GOW 3 when it dropped to around $35, beat that game & now I pretty much only play Transformers. The levels are really cool (although my only complaint is that they kind of all look the same. I really hope that they make different looking levels in the next Transformers game if they make another one.) and the controls are excellent. I never found myself getting frustrated at the controls which is a huge positive. Its very comfortable to run & target & shoot at the same time, its very smooth.
No graphic glitches that I could tell (didn't really find any glitches). Based on some of the negative reviews I've read about this game, I guess I'd say you should probably rent it first to see if you like it, but I really like this game & am glad I bought it. It also helped me to not have buyers remorse for buying the PS3.

Better than the movie games, not better than Transformers (Armada) for PS2,
By Apierion (NJ) - See all my reviews

When I first heard of this game, my overall reaction was "meh". Although I'm an old school Transfan going back to my childhood, I never really expected this IP to get a decent treatment after the horrendous Bay films (the first one was OK, but the second one was just depressing). Upon seeing the first trailer for this game and realizing they were going G1 (after a fashion) however, my curiosity was piqued.
So I went out and got this game on release for the PS3. Picked up the GS preorder for the Shockwave unlock. My first impression was "it takes 5 minutes to verify the build EACH TIME the game loads? uhhhhh not good". You read that right. Each time you start the game, before you get to the main menu (but after 3 different FMV videos), the game does a self-check that takes 2-5 minutes to complete. EACH TIME. So that sucks. OK, so how about the game? So lets get this out of the way first: Peter Cullen: great, as usual. As far as I can tell, no other original voice actors were involved, but in general the level of voice acting was pretty good, and they even went so far as to properly vocode Soundwave's voice. In general, the characters all felt right, when we saw them on screen during cutscenes. Which, by the way, are the best part of this game. First take on the single player campaign - ok we get to choose from three different transformers each level - level one gives Megatron, Brawl, & Breakdown. I think the choice here is obvious. Megatron is a tank in this game but feels just a wee-bit underpowered for his namesake, but overall, not terrible, although the low max ammo for his fusion cannon was irritating. 2ND stage was decepticon seekers, Starscream being the obvious choice here, and this time the character felt more appropriate. 3rd level gave the chance to play Soundwave, which felt underpowered again, but this time moreso than Megs - soundwave is a "scientist", which gives him a (useless for single player) healing gun, and a weak rifle for his weapon loadout. Fortunately we can pick up different weapons as the level progresses. Each character has a special ability or two as well, but most of the time it felt like a lost oppurtunity. Soundwave, for example, could deploy a "drone" that is basically a floating machine gun turret. Obviously, if this had been a cassette robot, that would have been much cooler and could have more or less satisfied the same game mechanic. Megs' special is a life-sucking attack which would have been cool except it's really hard to judge if you have an enemy in range for it or not, and if you miss, you still expend a charge. Other characters have completely useless force-push attacks, or marginally useful cloaks. The hovering ability is useless as it basically locks you in place and makes you an easy target. The transformations here also seem a bit uninspired. Obviously there is precedent in some choices (making Megatron a tank, for example), but some just feel shoehorned in to fit the gameplay. Soundwave, for example, turns into some generic hover-vehicle, when it could've been a lot more interesting if he turned into something more creative. In the cartoon, when he was on cybertron, you saw his trasnformation into something that looked like a streetlamp, but that left a lot to the imagination. Was he some kind of spying device(probably)? what could he do? perhaps he could transform and be rooted, but blend into the scenery while controlling one (or more) cassette robots, or hack defenses, or provide intel. Sadly, all he does is turn into a cybertronian truck. Blaster doesn't even make an appearance, nor do any of the combiners (in combined form, at any rate). Oh well, there's always next year... And that's about how the game continues. The banter between characters is entertaining but not anything we haven't heard before, if not for the fact that it does sound fairly authentic. The problem is for the most part it feels detached from the game itself, like some audio track from an episode of the cartoon semi-randomly overlaid on otherwise silent gameplay. Speaking of which, the gameplay itself is fairly generic 3rd-person shooter fair, although with a vehicle/transformation mechanic thrown in. It works, but it's not great. The complaints you're hearing elsewhere (generic levels, lack of cover-sticking, infuriating lack of ammo, and my personal pet peeve, unlimited hordes of enemies that don't stop until you advance, which works with low-ammo problem to become even more irritating) are all totally valid and what really keep this game from being a AAA title. I'll say right now I haven't played the multiplayer too much because frankly its hard to find people playing. The game lobby said each time I was on that there were about 6200 people online, but all the game lobbies were empty. I had some more luck finding a coop campaign level playing, but it seemed like I was just randomly dropped in some guys level, which I kinda wasn't thrilled with. I'd rather start a level from scratch. So how do I feel about this game? It's OK. Not great, but OK. A buy for Transformers fans, definately, as the treatment of the source material is the best part about this game (there are a lot of easter eggs for those who know the g1 series well). It easily ranks as the 2nd best TF game behind the 2004 PS2 game, but if you strip the TF skin, the game is a fairly underwhelming shooter. While not quite ready for the primetime, there IS a lot of potential here, and hopefully High Moon will get to make a sequel and polish the rough edges. Definately worth a rent, probably worth a buy if you're a big Transformers fan. Better than the last two TF Movie based games, but not better than the fantastic Armada based PS2 game, whose only flaw was the mysterious lack of humans on Earth. FYI that game, titled simply "Transformers" is $5 on amazon - and you should go play that immediately if you like this game, because while this game is OK, the PS2 Transformers game does all the same things better, with an additional mini-con (power-up/weapon) collecting meta-game thrown as well. The only thing War for Cybertron has on TF 2004 is the multiplayer. 3 generic robots out of 5.

I know it was an upset with the 1st two transformer games based off the movie but trust me, they have giving us justice with this new transformer game. Escalation mode is fun, online is cool & the story mode in campaign mode just keeps you in the game. You won't be dissapointed, especially if your a big fan.

Transformers: War for Cybertron is a fairly new game that seems to have gotten off pretty well. It ties in at the bare minimum with the movies, so it doesn't necessarily have anything to slow it down. Despite this, it somehow finds a way to be slowed down by itself. Like several Transformers games in recent years, the two different campaigns make for a few extra hours of gameplay, however, unlike its predeccesors, the campaigns don't parallel each other and go in order of events.
The game is fairly fun, but it's also a little repetetive. Being a wave-shooter, you have to stay on your toes and try not to get shot. The lack of ammo vs. alternate weapons can be a little disappointing now and then, but in several cases, can give you new battle strategies and an advantage in battle when it changes. The vehicle modes look cool, but unless you're in one of the 2 missions that lets you take control of a jet, they're not incredible. The jets can boost, hover, and have infinite ammo for their two weapons, which is one more than all other vehicles. The game is not horrible. But it's not quite deserving of the review sticker that comes on the packaging when you buy it, which gives it a 9/10. Personally, I give it a 7.2/10. For a full review, you can check Gamespot and read the review there.
