Nice, but not great., November 19, 2008
This review is from: Transformers: War Within Pocket Paperback Volume 1 (Transformers War Within) (Paperback)
Simon Furman is given full reign with this title, meant to predate general generation one continuity. The artwork is impressive, abeit a bit disproportionate. The dialog is a bit poetic at times. And I don't mean deep, I mean it's just meant to look deep. Furman does his best to make Optimus Prime as meek as possible, while making Grimlock the stronger, more capable leader of the two. A lot of characters make cameos throughout the story, so it's interesting to see how they appear in their cybertronian forms, which look far more powerful then the Earth forms they would eventually aquire. A few of these characters would be released as toys in the Titanium line, which proved unsuccessful.
As a book, it's a decent read. It's among the very few materials based on pre-G1, so it's really all you've got to fill that millions of years gap. I'd recommend getting the bigger version, though. Sometimes the text is hard to read, and the book falls apart easily.

A good read with a thin plot., September 6, 2006
This review is from: Transformers: War Within Pocket Paperback Volume 1 (Transformers War Within) (Paperback)
The plot doesn't amount to much more than Optimus Prime coming to terms with being leader of the autobots. If you have read other works written by Simon Furman, it will taste very familiar. This story lacks the deeper plots and tactical nuances that you will find in Transformers: Armada Vol 2 and 3, or GIJoe Vs Transformers Vol 1 and 2.
That said, I still recommend this book. The art is fantastic, and really enough to enjoy on it's own. Dozens of core characters are upgraded with beautiful cybertronian forms - all of which appear to be capable of being produced as toys at some point. (Their robot and vehicle forms share the appropriate elements. There's no cheating like in past stories featuring Cybertronian forms.)
Final thought: The art is terrific in creativity and execution. This alone is enough reason to own this book. Furman's plot is between thin and non-existant, but the dialogue and action are as solid and enjoyable as ever.
