Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

Intensity is a gift that needs to be nurtured. Unfortunately, so many people today find themselves struggling with the intensity of a challenging child and wind up being advised to moderate the intensity by using medications as a first intervention rather than as a very last resort. I've developed an approach that puts parents, teachers and professionals into the driver's seat and gives them the perspective and strategies to shift children into using their intensity in beautiful ways.

Many children wind up on medications simply because there has not been an approach that consistently helps them to use their intensity successfully. Seventy-five percent of all children evaluated for conditions such as ADHD and Opposition Defiance Disorder receive medication on the very first visit. The unfortunate underlying message is: your teacher can't control you, your parent can't control you, and you can't control yourself...you need a substance to control whatever is going on inside you. Parents and teachers can end up feeling inadequate and blamed, treatment professionals can sometimes be at a loss as to how best to help, and the result for the child is being at risk for both side effects that can rarely be adequately explained in the course of an evaluation and for greater loss of self than can ever be fully anticipated.

Ordinary methods of parenting and teaching typically backfire with intense children. Despite the best of intentions, the harder adults attempt normal responses, the worse the situation can inadvertently become. In contrast, The Nurtured Heart Approach powerfully shifts these same children into using their intensity in great ways, setting these children up for new lives of success and wonderful inner wealth...Howard Glasser

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly superb, life changing, March 18, 2007
This review is from: Transforming The Difficult Child- 6 Hour Seminar on DVD (DVD)
My husband and I were recommended this product by a physician. We were dreading a 6 hour seminar and thought we'd be 'good' and watch half an hour every evening when we could. The first evening we put it on ..we were still watching at 3am. The presentation is mesmorising. Howard is a true master. He takes the time to build each concept on a solid foundation of logic. He substantiates his material with flourishes of insight, gentle humour and real life experiences. You can't help being drawn to the genuine passion/empathy he has had for all the kids and parents we has worked with and you get slighty hooked on the dectective work he has undergone to reach his techniques and hone them to perfection by analysing them at work. Then it all just flies when it makes a powerful connection to your own situation. We are not the type of people to leap into a parenting fad etc but we were honestly quite excited to try the techniques on our 6 year old. It was like a magic trick. Previously we had tantrums left, right and centre. Within a week we suddenly realised we couldn't remember the last outburst when he was with us. This system is easy to follow, the rules are clear for parents and kids, it stops situations excalating into kids tantrums and parents screaming lectures. Our son's sense of wellbeing has soared. Harold's resolute focus on the inherent good in 'intense' kids now characterises the way we feel about our son all the time. Before our lives were a white knuckle ride of constantly worrying if we were being too strict or not strict enough...and sensing there was going to be a terrible crash at some point. Now we know we are spot on, not due to over confidence or blind faith but because we can see the results. These guys have a really good web site (just google 'difficult child')If you are not sure about buying the product have a look, there are long exerpts from the book which go a long way to explaning what it is about. The DVD is expensive. If you can afford it go for it. We are so very grateful that we did.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is like magic!, August 7, 2007
This review is from: Transforming The Difficult Child- 6 Hour Seminar on DVD (DVD)
I have watched this DVD as well as read the book. Both are very good and I recommend seeing/reading both since they compliment each other and also give you a deeper understanding of the approach. I have a son who is 7 and I have tried everything to help with his behavior. I was about to start him on medication since he was recently diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. I am so happy I found this info before medicating my child! In the last month, my son has truly made some huge changes and he is really just a wonderful boy now. We still have some work to do, and I am hoping that school will go well when it starts, but I am certain that more positive changes are on the way as long as my husband and I continue to use this approach. It is well worth it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This changed our way of parenting, July 29, 2008

It also changed our view of our son. It helped us understand him and therefore deal better with his behavioral issues. You can get this on CD or book, but watching the DVD is like being in the classroom. You get to see people interacting and nothing else is quite like being there.
