The book argues that reading literature and discussing it in the classroom should be central to 21st century education. Literary narrative shapes us as we shape it. Through reading and discussing good literary narrative, we stay deeply engaged with the best in ourselves and find location in the world. Through literature, we are on an ongoing quest to discover who we are.

This book goes deep, discussing how important language and narrative are, and how much the 21st century classroom needs that sense of language and narrative to create the most important learning experiences. For Waxler and Hall, working in a long line of tradition and innovation, human beings want to learn, and they want to know themselves. Literature is the best path to that possibility.
