Editorial Reviews

Review

"Just over a year since Donna Hilbert's husband Larry was tragically killed comes the amazing Transforming Matter. This collection examines faith, grief, the afterlife, and, most poignantly, how to love the ones who are no longer here. Though Hilbert grapples with weighty and difficult subjects, her tone is refreshingly anti-maudlin. Precise details of Southern California so infuse the spirit of these poems that in every one is a spark of light and even joy." -- Denise Duhamel

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Collection by a Master Poet, January 22, 2002

This review is from: Transforming Matter (Paperback)
The sensuality, wit, elegance, and heartbreak in these poems reflects a complex woman and a brilliant poet at the height of her powers. Playfulness, anger, compassion, rue, and despair abut one another continually in Hilbert's responses to the sudden loss of her beloved husband. Her exquisite poems directly confront the beauty and terror inherent in the human condition, and her simplicity and understatement are often unnerving.
