5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opening January 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a new pastor of a small traditional church. For the last few years I have stumbled through prayer meetings where I watched people literally fall asleep. We would do our list and we all prayed for the same thing. Now understand me please, these people all have the best intentions and are loving people. But I couldn't help to feel we were missing something. I had another Pastor tell me about Daniel. At first I was a skeptic and then I had the opportunity to attend a prayer conference in which Daniel taught. I was blown away and I couldn't wait to read "Transforming Prayer" to learn more.

I wasn't disappointed. Daniel uses real life testimonies of people who have been deeply impacted by this simple biblical approach to prayer. I have always appreciated simplicity. Having spent twenty-two years in the Air Force, one thing I leaned is "the simpler the better" when leading people. Using the Lord's Prayer as the frame work to create a simple 4/4 time diagram that teaches Reverence-Response-Request-Readiness, easy to remember and easy to teach.

Using scripture to start the "reverence" the Spirit and the Word invoke the response and the way you go. God's word, The Holy Spirit guides the prayer time naturally. I have never been this excited about prayer and I have never seen others get this excited about prayer once they experience it. I am still learning and now I feel equipped with the tools to lead my church in prayer. I'm sure I will go back to this book more than once. If you're looking to see yourself and others get excited about prayer, buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Appendices Alone Are Worth It! January 29, 2011
By AirRush
Format:Paperback
I was stuck in an airport yesterday for seven hours. By God's grace, I was also stuck with Transforming Prayer, Daniel Henderson's new book! Henderson has written much on prayer, but this is his best work, from this pastor, husband, and dad's point of view. It's not so much about how to pray as it is about how prayer will automatically overflow out of a life of worship.

When I first heard Daniel Henderson speak a few years ago, he said one thing that no one could let go of: "The only enduring motive for prayer is that God is worthy to be sought." That profound statement, which shows up in the book, could really summarize the whole thing. Learn what it means to let God start the conversation. Discover the freedom of agenda-less prayer. Delight in the truth that God wants good things for His children - but the good things all pale in comparison to Him wanting to reveal Himself to us.

I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've Been Waiting For This Book! March 8, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the book I have been searching for for a very long time. I have been so dissatisfied with praying through a prayer list and have tried praying using Christ's example of prayer, but just couldn't seem to connect well. My "quiet time" consists of reading from the Bible and then praying and waiting to hear from God. As I read through this book I was encouraged to "seek God's face" and to pray during my time of Bible reading instead of waiting until the reading was completed. The book included examples of real people who have changed their prayer time and drawn closer to God. There are lots of tools included also, and I had opportunities to work on changing my prayer time from drab to a time of rich, meaningful connection with God.

Finally, there is a section which encourages corporate prayer with the goal of being united in the work of God in our churches and the world.

I am so pleased to own this book and now that I have completed the reading, I play to use it often as a tool to pursue a prayer life that is pleasing to God.

Bethany House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly suggested March 9, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
aniel Henderson gets right to the heart of the Christian life in this book. Coming from a strong background in personal experience of leading worship based prayer Henderson gets right to the root of the issue. When most people pray they spend 90% of their time asking God about things for themselves and 10% asking for things to get better. Henderson reminds the reader that prayer is a conversation with God that needs to be a 2 way exchange. Henderson goes further in his discussion of prayer and presents a strong application supporting the John Macarthur quote "Prayer is not asking God to do my will. It is bringing myself into conformity with His will. It is asking Him to do His will and to give me the grace to enjoy it." Henderson presents an entirely new way of communication with God. It is best described in his discussion of the 4/4 pattern. 1. Upward 2. Downward 3. Inward 4. Outward

What I really appreciate most about this book is that Henderson discusses praying through scripture and then leads the reader through an exercise in how to pray through scripture. Henderson challenges the reader to take the focus of prayer off of the individual and back onto God where it belongs. I would highly suggest reading this book!

I love Daniel Henderson's book "Transforming Prayer". It has helped me realize that focusing on God rather than myself can give me peace and joy in my life far beyond my circumstances. I am living my life in worship and walking in the Light daily! I am currently leading a small group using this book and the accompanying study guide and it has blessed all of us tremendously. Highly recommended!
