Gaelle's Transient is definitely worth a look,
By
This review is from: Transient (Audio CD)
Gaelle's CD started off with a lot of promise. The first song "Falling" is a great song. It features a latin-style beat with well placed guitar and piano melodies. However, "Parkway" was a total turn off. It sounded like something I heard before. It sounded like the stuff I was trying to avoid. It's typical R&B. I'm totally sick of it and it rears its ugly head here 2 times. I'm sure lots of women would like the song "Parkway", but it wasn't something that I was expecting from a Naked Music artist. That's why I buy Naked Music. To escape the clutches of commercial sounding songs. And that's what I got here 2 times. That isn't to say that this a bad CD because ut's quite good. However, as I said, the typical R&B sounding songs appear much more than I would like.
"Give it back" sounds okay, but it didn't catch on with me. As her vocals don't sound as good here with some of the other songs. "Fade Away" is a cool song. It's nice and chill. "Love you more" is a good song. With catchy song with a nice melody. "Repetition" is okay, but it sounds like one of those typical R&B songs "Shape Shifting" doesn't really sound like a song, it sounds more like an interlude. "Transient" has a nice chill mood. I like this one. "Rain" is another good one. It kind of sounds like an Everything But the Girl song. Filled with a downtempo house beat. I really liked this one. ""Separate Rooms" is another good song. Probably my second favorite. This is a song with a haunting electronic beat. Gaelle has been featured on Ananda Project's song "Cascade of Colors", which I absolutely loved. So I was already somewhat familiar with her. This CD is pretty good overall and I would recommend it for those who like slow, downtempo like songs.

Intriguing,

If mixing 80's vibes with ambient and adding introspective lyrics is your cup of tea, this is the one for you.
Gaelle's Transient continues Naked Music's latest trend of going retro with some 80's effects. I don't mean the scratches and some of the more dated-sounding effects ... but somehow this album sounds like one of the best smooth recordings from 1985 that you never heard. Yet it remains throughly modern with blissfully sparse production that allows the unique chord structures to stand out. Gaelle's quiet yet authoritative voice -- a butterscotch alto -- is a perfect match for the downtempo mood that is occasionally spiced with flashes of house. No ad-libs, no acrobatics ... and none are needed. The lyrics are perfectly suited to this release; but different than what we're used to from Naked Music in that they are somewhat dark and not immediately uplifting. Some would even say that certain songs are depressing because of the subject matter, so don't expect the light, romantic touch of Aya or Blue Six here. Transient is a solid effort and worthy of 4 stars.

A Beautiful Album....,
By Chillin (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Transient (Audio CD)
Gaelle's Transient is one of the most beautiful albums I've heard in a very long time. I been listening to it from beginning to end nonstop. It's a real good nighttime album. The album has great songwriting and production...and most of all...it's something different. Not your typical RnB. It's RnB, electronica, chillout, house...all in one. Nice little mix. The live instruments in the album balances out the electronic sounds. I like all the songs, but "Falling" (#1) is the money-maker. What a perfect way to start an album. The title track "Transient", "Repetition", "Fade Away" are also great standout tracks. But the whole thing is beautiful...that's the best way to describe it. I'm planning to buy my girlfriend a copy of this for her birthday, I think she'll love it. If you like the "Best of Sade" album, then you should have no problem getting into this. This is not your typical "trying to be mainstream" type of music. Gaelle just wanna be cool with you, make you feel good...and her album did the job. Please get the album. You will not regret it. You need something different to listen to anyway.

Raindancing with Gaelle...,
By
This review is from: Transient (Audio CD)
"Transient" is Gaelle's amazing debut and stylistically, she reminds me a bit of Amel larrieux or Goapelle. With roots in dance music, the CD is a dazzlingly eclectic delight. It manages to sound both retro and futuristic at the same time.
From the stunning downtempo, electronic jazzy soul sound of "Parkway" (a wicked tale of a spurned one-night-stand's revenge, sung in a lower register; "Fatal attraction" set to music), the upbeat R&B "Give it back" (pianos sprinkled on a bubbling, razor sharp bassline), the haunting yet shimmery title track "Transient" (with deep, prayerful lyrics and sweeping strings), the sparkly echoing "Repetition" (which changes tempo and transforms into a lovely dance song in the final 2 minutes), and the latin tinged guitar drenched pair of "Falling" and the instrumental "Haiti" (alluding to her Haitian roots), the album is a sonic kaleidoscope. My favourite is the aptly titled "Rain", an echoey club number with sparse, repetitive lyrics, tinkling pianos and sprinkled with horns. It's like dancing in the rain. Awesome!!! Other standouts are the sombre "Moonsglow" (with gently shuffling beats), and the gently distorted "Shape shifting" (with subtle vocoder effects), and "Separate rooms" with skittery beats. Lovely ethereal echo-ey vocals, intelligent lyrics, eerie cinematic sounds and subtle electronic flourishes make for one of the best albums ever to sneak under the radar.

Descriptive Words,
By Ruby Lee "smilingcupid" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews

Perhaps refreshing and soothing are strong enough to describe the feeling gained while listening to Gaelle's Transient. The original vibe on each song is so lovely and captivating that it suits any mood from passionate desire to vengeful action. (see "Parkway").
From beginning to finish, Gaelle vocally delivers lyrics that, no matter how familiar they seem, were created so well that it feels like it's the first time a real love song has been written. With a range of production from soft ballads to upbeat tempos, this CD is emotionally perfect. "Falling" is captivating, the retro "Give It Back" is worth repeating, the wave crashing "Fade Away" is poetic. Surprisingly, it was not "Rain" that participated in the overuse of the rainstorm effect. Instead, "Repetition" took a chance and its haunting message succeeds in expressing the inner thoughts of a person in love. I love it. I love it. I love it. Etc. Transient is a brilliant piece of art with elements that cover every ground. Although it flows like a Summer Breeze, this CD was a perfect start for 2005. One can only hope for more to come this year.

One of Naked Music's Strongest Offerings,

Okay, I'll admit it...I love pretty much anything this label puts out and I live on their website but this is the crown jewel in the collection! There is no other words to describe this CD but lush and beautiful. Gaelle has a very haunting voice that just makes you feel her. The album is a must have for those who are House-heads(like me) or just enjoy really cool chill vibes in their music. My favorite song is "Parkway"
because it totally caught me off guard and then it made me laugh. I won't tell you what it's about, just suffice it to say, don't cross a woman. Gaelle has been on the independent music scene for a minute and this is a first album for her and I personally hope to see many, many more. Sister-Girl, you've got a fan in me.

Something New For NAKED,
By
This review is from: Transient (Audio CD)
You know, i think what some people don't realize is that Gaelle's "Transient" was produced at her record lable SPEAKEASY RECORDS and distributed by NAKED MUSIC, therefore, it will obviously have a different sound. But, above all, this is a very solid release in which Gaelle proves her musical stylings are nothing short of awesome.
There are people who may be expecting the same NAKED sound we are all familiar with (true, i could compare this a little bit to Aquanote's "The Pearl), but you will be getting here is more of a chillout/trance disc, not so much deep house. Also, it has more of a R&B touch to it, especially Gaelle's voice. Pick this cd up if you want to hear something a little different, "taboo", if you will, for NAKED MUSIC. Different, but amazing.

Worth the Wait,

Well...what can I say? I've been a Naked Music fan for quite a while now, and I own almost all the volumes. There were two songs that I always loved to hear- "Rain" - from Nude Dimensions 3, and "Falling" from Carte Blanche 3. Both of these tracks were by the talent known as Gaelle. When I found out her disc had finally come out, I had to go out and get it. It doesn't disappoint...there are some great songs on it, including the two that I loved before, and there are some new greats- "Give it Back" and "Repetition" being my faves. I would have to say that the first half of the CD is stronger than the second, although "Rain" IS track 10. If you are familiar with Naked Music, I'd pick this one up...I have the Aya CD as well, but I enjoy this one more. Can't really compare Gaelle to other singers, as she has a different vibe. But, if you like Jill Scott, Angie Stone, India.Arie, and Alicia Keys (as I do), and don't mind a deep house vibe, you'll likely appreciate Gaelle. Give her a chance, you won't regret it.

Absolutely Hot,

This review is from: Transient (Audio CD)
I must say that I've never really listened to house or dance music. I do like R & B music, but I've lately been trying to find something different. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and I found it. Transient is such an awesome album. Track #1 "Falling" is definitely one of the biggest highlights on this CD. I will also like to say that I did love every song on here so I don't need to shuffle which is such a rare find these days. I get so disappointed half of the time because it's so hard to find such great music these days. You listen to the radio and all you hear is the same thing. It's the same Sh**, Different day sort of thing. But definitely not here. It's has a mellow R&B house mix...it reminds me of those cool, swanky dark hip clubs that I'm not sure really exist, well, maybe in NYC...or in my head atleast. You get the idea. Buy this CD. Buy it. Succumb to the peer pressure. Me and the other people who wrote these reviews can't all be wrong, can we?
I didn't think so.....

Mad talent? Gaelle's got it to spare!,
By Zengrrl (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews

I absolutely love female vocalists and I love Naked Music so, of course, this one is in my collection as well as in my headphones. I was so excited to see that Gaelle had a solo release. As most trip-hop fanatics know, Gaelle Addison is the woman (along with Chris Brann) behind the incredible, incredible song "Cascades of Colour" off of the Ananda Project album Release. I don't know how many hundreds of time I have listened to that song. So beautiful, and so hypnotic. So, while my expectations were obviously high, I am still surprised by HOW much I love the album. Everyone who hears it asks me who I am listening to.
Gaelle has such an amazing voice, like melting honey, but with an edge. Her powerful voice is easily recognizable, but it still manages to sound completely different on every track. The entire album is a thing of beauty, and it certainly starts out strong. The first four tracks are probably my favorite, but I particularly like "Parkway". The lyrics for that song are worth the price of the album all on their own. The song is absolutely genius, definitely the stalker song of this generation. The rest of the songs on this album are nowhere near as disturbed. In fact, the album is the perfect blend of gorgeous vocals, beautiful and funky beats, and the lyrics speak primarily of deep love and the promise of a better tomorrow. This is electronic R&B at its best. I can not possibly recommend Gaelle enough. If you like what you hear, you may also want to check out Lisa Shaw's album Cherry. Lisa Shaw has a similar sound and is another Naked Music artist. In fact, I think that Eric Stamile, Gaelle's writing partner and boyfriend, engineered Lisa's album as well. Hey, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. |
