From Booklist
If the title of this directory sounds a bit familiar, it should. The editor began a bimonthly periodical,
Transitions Abroad: The Alternative Travel Magazine, in 1977, which has appeared regularly on newsstands ever since. Intended for travelers, as opposed to tourists, it overflows with valuable information for those intending to work, study, or live abroad for extended periods of time. Over the years,
Transitions Abroad has earned wide recognition as the authoritative source on this type of travel. Editor Hubbs decided to publish annual compilations of each volume of the magazine. Thus, the present directory was born several years ago.
Organized into three major sections--"Life-Seeing Travel," "Learning Abroad," and "Working Abroad" --the directory has maintained the original concept: "to detail the ways and means to meet people of other cultures in a nontouristic setting." "Life-Seeing Travel," the largest portion, lists country-by-country guidebooks and background material, educational tours (including sponsoring organizations), programs designed for specific types (age levels, families, disabled, elderly), and environmentally responsible travel. "Learning Abroad" is loaded with educational opportunities--short and long term, high-school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. Cost, availability dates, academic credits/prerequisites, and contacts are all covered. "Working Abroad" again runs the gamut from volunteer positions to highly skilled paid professionals.
Regardless of age or interest, there is something here for everyone. For cultural diversity, ethnic exploration, personal growth, or out-of-the-ordinary educational experiences, this is the directory to consult first. Reasonably priced, it will be a popular item in public, academic, and high-school libraries, where it will complement the biennial Work, Study, Travel Abroad: The Whole World Handbook (Council on International Educational Exchange, 12th ed., 1995).
