Editorial Reviews

Review

"An excellent introductory volume for teachers and students alike.... The effectiveness of Lefevere's volume is further underscored by his successful effort to focus his study across cultures, rather than favoring any specific language or genre." --Analytical and Enumerative Bibliography

André Lefevere is a big name in Translation Studies. His seminal works include Translation, Rewriting and the Manipulation of Literary Frame (1992) and Literary Knowledge: A Polemical and Programmatic Essay on its Nature, Growth and Transmission (1977). In Translating Literature: Practice and Theory in a Comparative Literature Context he sheds light on the four levels of the translation process: illocutionary language use, ideology, poetics and universe of discourse. He contends that translators often encounter a sizeable number of problems at all four levels and should device strategies that enable them to surmount potential hurdles in the translation process. As he puts it, "Translators have to make decisions over and over again on the levels of ideology, poetics, and universe of discourse"(88). In other words, translators need to understand the position of the source text in the source literature and the source culture; without which the translation process gets nightmarish. Translation, in Lefevere's view is a two-pronged enterprise involving the product and process phases. Translators need to be cognizant of linguistic and extra-linguistic elements of the source texts in order to produce a translation that passes the test of dynamic equivalence. In a nutshell, Translating Literature: Practice and Theory in a Comparative Literature Context is a priceless working tool that would be very serviceable to translators, translation scholars and students of translation. I would recommend it for use by translation institutes and comparative literature departments nationwide.

It arrived perfectly. I needed it because I am doing a specialist course about translation and interpreting, so it helps a lot. Thanks.

Well, I needed the book for a paper I must deliver at College, so my opinion is biased ;D
Very well-organised book, nice texts. It shouldn't be different, as Lefevere is a reference in translation of literature.
Nice purchase!

A great book for beginners in the field. I'm sure it would be a good choice for an introductory course, maybe it could even be used as a class book.
