Book Description

097901753X 978-0979017537 May 2007
Word Translations (1 of the 8 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this quantitative content area. This guide analyzes all categories of the GMAT's complex math word problems and provides frameworks for attacking each question type. Students then practice translating challenging word problems into clear equations. The book offers a unique balance between two competing emphases: test-taking strategies and in-depth content understanding. Practice problem sets build specific foundational skills in each topic and include the most advanced content that many other prep books ignore. As the average GMAT score required to gain admission to top b-schools continues to rise, this guide provides test takers with the depth and volume of advanced material essential for succeeding on the GMAT's computer adaptive format. Book also includes online access to 6 full-length Simulated Practice GMAT Exams at Manhattan GMAT's website.

*Each chapter builds comprehensive content understanding in the given topic area by providing rules, strategies and in-depth examples of how the GMAT tests a given topic and how you can respond accurately and quickly. Each chapter is followed by 15 challenging practice problems, progressively increasing in difficulty and designed to increase your ability from novice to expert in the given topic. Answers with comprehensive explanations follow each problem set.
*A special chapter provides specific strategies for attacking GMAT Data Sufficiency Problems that involve the use of Word Translations. Data Sufficiency problems are uniquely challenging problems that account for more than one-third of the quantitative problems you will see on the GMAT.
*After mastering all the Word Translations topics and completing Manhattan GMAT's comprehensive problem sets, you can test your knowledge on Word Translations problems that have appeared on past GMAT exams. These problems are contained in The Official Guides For GMAT Review (sold separately), published by GMAC, the organization that administers the GMAT. Manhattan GMAT has categorized all the problems in The Official Guides by topic and the comprehensive list of categorized Word Translations problems appears in the back of the Word Translations Strategy Guide.

What Students Are Saying: "Separating each of the 7 topics into into its own book helps segment each area of learning. The Manhattan GMAT materials are much more in-depth than other study aids." "A very holistic approach touching on all aspects of each topic. Very well thought-out curriculum. Homework and drills are concise and appropriate--very effective." "I found the explanations easy to understand and appreciate how they explain the true subject matter and do not merely provide gimmicks for solving problems." --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of the basics, December 20, 2008
This book does a very god job of covering Rate x Time=Distance problems, work problems, probability problems, and overlapping sets problems. It is also a major improvement over the previous edition in all areas.

The "word translation" problems in the real GMAT, however, make up for the largest portion of the Quant section of the GMAT. This book covers approximately maybe 80% of the question types.

The difficulty of the questions are geared toward the middle level test takers. The book does not cover some of the hardest questions GMAT gives you. But it will provide a very good foundation for the GMAT.

I recommend this book for those who are preparing for the GMAT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book, April 24, 2009
The World Translations book, like all of Manhattan GMAT's review books, is excellent. It covers all of the basics, which is great if you need a refresher, as well as the advanced concepts, which is perfect if you're shooting for a 700+ score.

In particular, World Translation problems are some of the hardest ones on the GMAT, but with the help of the review guide, I was able to tackle even the most challenging problems. I'm sure many people struggle at first with World Translation problems (they can definitely be tricky), but the book does a good job of taking you through concepts step-by-step so that you really understand what each question is asking, and what the best approach to take is.

I highly recommend this guide, as well as all of Manhattan GMAT's guides, if you are serious about doing well on the GMATs. I actually took Manhattan GMAT's review course (the books come free when you take the course), which I would also highly recommend.

I am one of the students who are good at Math and not so good at English. I wanted to hone my Math skills and get a feel of GMAT problems. This book seems to do just that. Most of the material covered in this book is like review for me and the strategies taught in this book are not new to me except a few of them. So, I am happy with this book.
