A disappointment March 26, 2004
Format:Paperback
This book doesn't live up to what it claims. What's wrong with this book? First, the quality of the printed Chinese characters is appalling. Proper translation is always done INTO the mother tongue. (By the way: English is only my third language, so please excuse my poor writing). This means that in virtually all cases the buyer of this book is still busy learning Chinese as a foreign language. When you learn Chinese, all the characters are somewhat mysterious and difficult to distinguish from one another. It is therefore CRUCIAL that the printing be of good quality. In this book, what we get is poor-quality, photocopy-like, small and blobby printing. A few pages are actually unreadable! This is unacceptable, for such a highly priced book. Second, the book does acknowledge that in this day and age computer-aided translation is a must. But the sample translations included in the book are not even present, as digitized text, on the accompanying CD-ROM!!! Come on... who is being fooled here? Finally, this book is such an obvious afterthought that, at times, it says "Japanese" instead of "Chinese", in its content. The many Chinese dictionaries mentioned in the bibliography are all more than 10 years old, with only a couple of (5 year old) exceptions. And NO ISBN number is ever indicated either. Well... in one word this book is a botch-up job, and a big, expensive, disappointment.
