If there is one thing I can't stand are folks who, when presented with a problem, say “It can't be done”. You know the type. No matter what opportunity is presented to them they just can't get out of their own way. Tough people to deal with for sure. On the other hand I LOVE talking to and reading about smart people. People who are ingenious and think outside the box. People who see a challenge and tackle it head on. Nuno Bernardo, author of the book “Transmedia 2.0” – (How to Create an Entertainment Brand using a Transmedial Approach to Storytelling) is such a person.
“What is Transmedia?”. It's a big word for something you have witnessed for years. It is taking a story and moving it across many media platforms. I'll use a Disney movie for example. It can be any movie from them, just imagine one. You watch the movie at a theater on a large screen. That is one form of media, but now think of all the other ways you can experience the movie after your initial viewing. There are video games for home, phone apps, books, toys, board games and the list goes on. You can continue to be in the story long after watching the movie. It becomes part of your life. That is transmedia. Sure, Disney is a giant media company, but you can pull it off too with your story.
We are in an age when everyone has some form of electronic device, even young children. Bernardo teaches the reader to think differently when creating a story. No matter what type of story you are writing. He encourages you to think about how it can be turned into other forms of entertainment using the characters and story you have already created. Can it be a web series? Can it be a card game? Can it be a serialized story for YouTube viewers? You get the idea.Read more ›
