GAY DAD - TRANSMISSION,
By
This review is from: Transmission (Audio CD)
The high expectations that were surrounding GAY DAD's sophomore attempt, TRANSMISSION - ended up confirming this time their name is bigger than the music. This is a good record. Five stars means a complete classic, four stars - excellent. Leisure Noise is excellent, so although Transmission is among a different caliber, Dad's style on Transmission takes on the alter-ego of modern glamrock, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Suede. If you follow these artists, you may have a partial attachment as a continued fan, but this album is not a fan builder. Older Bowie or Pop fans that have never heard Gay Dad will not find the salvage as a newer Suede fan (who seems to be losing their appeal). The posiitve - Cliff Jones' voice is stronger than ever, and some of these tracks are catchy enough to be remembered fondly. You will be hearing "NIGHTCLUB" in your head all week upon first listen. Noteworthy tracks also include: Transmission, Now Always and Forever, Harder Faster, Dinosaur, and Keep It Heavy....a term that Cliff seems to be partial of.

A Fan and then a Critic,
By WrtnWrd "Hankman" (Northridge, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Transmission (Audio CD)
Though I listen to Gay Dad's Leisure Noise quite a bit after two years, I originally thought they'd become a major band. Not so, it appears now. They avoid the sophomore slump on Transmission by scaling back their ambitions. That's both a good thing (Transmission is more direct, harder) and a bad one (its rock is often sui generis). I enjoyed the pretensions of Leisure Noise and miss them here. Which isn't to say I don't like the new CD. More than half the tracks impress me; they just don't engage me as they should. Isn't that how it is with consumer culture? One minute you're a raving fan; the next minute you're a bloody critic!

If you're a true Gay Dad fan, this CD should satisfy,

It's too bad this band doesn't get more attention in the U.S. Granted, they're music isn't life changing or extra-ordinary, but they stay true to the Brit pop sound. Which means that if you like Brit pop, you should definitely check out this album as well as Leisure Noise (thier '99 release). They both offer straight-forward pop rock music that refreshes you and puts you in a good mood. My favorite song on the album is probably "Transmission," although others include, "Breathe" and "Promise of a Miracle." Basically, I think the album rocks and anyone who's looking for an album with a Brit pop sound, should buy this one. I'm looking forward to hear more from Gay Dad, and I've heard they are already working on a third album.
