5.0 out of 5 stars Doing the Harder Right, December 9, 2003
By
Dirk Baxter (Athens, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
As an external consultant who is an Industrial/Organizational psychologist, I am impressed with the "common sense" approach of the Transparency Edge. As one who is grounded in the hard-core research as it applies to organizations and organizational development at the leader level, the anecdotes used effectively illustrate some of the common misperceptions and ethical shortcomings of high ranking professionals. This book is timely considering the events plastered all over the media recently. These events have brought down the largest companies in so ignoble of a way.

This book was recommended to me by a colleague because she knew that my research explored some of the darker sides of vocational interests, and it dovetails nicely into where my research left off. Leadership skills investigated in this book all deal with how to do a harder right instead of an easier wrong. We can all learn from this book as individuals, but leaders should definitely revisit these issues. I thoroughly enjoyed this "read."

5.0 out of 5 stars Credibility is Critical to a Leader's Effectiveness, October 27, 2003

This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
A powerful tool that emphasizes behaviors necessary to establish and sustain credibility. Focuses on why credibility and integrity are so important in any leadership role as well as how to ensure you've got it. Reminds us that how we perceive ourselves is not always the same as how others' perceive us. It's essential for leaders to be aware of the gaps in order to address them.

This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
Within the first few pages of The Transparency Edge, I had a much clearer understanding of how transparency applies to leadership. This book gave me specific behaviors to incorporate and practical concepts to consider in my day-to-day decision making. It's the only book I've found that applies transparency to leadership on an individual level. With rich data and compelling stories of real business leaders, this book is sure to make a difference for other business owners like me. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great leadership book!, December 7, 2003
By
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
With so many leadership books available, it is refreshing and surprising to read one that actually offers original ideas, rather than simply recycling old leadership concepts. This book is an elegantly written, easy-to-read guide to leadership effectiveness---leaders who master the nine key behaviors that contribute to leadership transparency and credibility will be well-positioned to succeed in these turbulent times. I especially appreciated the multitude of practical examples and real-life anecdotes. The authors have provided sufficient details to enable readers to be able to apply many of the useful ideas to their own leadership challenges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Road map to the top!, November 10, 2003
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
As an educator at a major midwest university and a former CFO in a multinational corporation, I am continually amazed at how little practical information is available on effective leadership. My brother recommended this book to me and I found it to be a true "road map" for aspiring leaders. The principles put forth by Pagano are supported by compelling real life examples and solid statistical analysis. I believe my students will get a jump start on their competition by gaining "The Transparency Edge". This foundation in today's leadership requirements should be understood and embraced by anyone who aspires to effectively lead. Fron CEO to team leader, the insights provided in this well written, instructive guidebook will increase your effectiveness and build your leadership skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Triple Play-a great book for me, my team and my boss., November 1, 2003

This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
I checked out the website for this book and see it's a finalist for FAST COMPANY magazine's March 2004 book of the month. No surprise here! The authors ask tough questions that made me do some thinking, especially about my reputation. I realize when it comes to figuring out how other people might see me-in some areas, (I admit it)-I don't have a clue. The book doesn't leave you hanging. The stories are interesting, fresh and the authors give real world advice, not pie-in-the-sky stuff. Plus the research statistics are hard hitting! Ouch!
But the best thing about the book for me? It made me want to get better as a manager and co-worker. Thanks for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Cutting-Edge Reading For Business Executives!, October 27, 2003
By
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
In the wake of major corporate scandals over the past few years, "The Transparency Edge" is cutting-edge reading for every business executive.

If all companies took this book to heart, we could have avoided the financial fiascos at Enron, WorldCom, etal. The Paganos offer a nine-step system for creating credible leaders in the workplace. But like any system, it's only as good as the aplication.

The authors provide not only solid theory, but also a practical way to live out the core principles of an organization. Well-researched, with lots of specific examples, this book features a unique 360-degree leadership assessment tied to the nine behaviors all business executives should strive to emulate for their co-workers.

As one who licenses a comprehensive mentor program to Fortune 500 companies and other organizations that features 12 monthly seminars, I'm reminded that the first lesson is on values. I'm adding this book to the recommended reading list for Lesson I. If an organization isn't reputable and their people can't be trusted, nothing else matters. Thank you, Barbara and Elizabeth, for driving home this critical message in such a meaningful and memorable manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful book that's destined to become a favorite, October 15, 2003
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
Having "grown up" in a Fortune 50 company, I have had the opportunity to be mentored by some terrific leaders. Moreover, I've attended some of the best training classes in corporate America. Still, I learned more from this one book than all the classes I've ever attended. The Paganos have managed to write the definitive instruction manual for great leadership. The lessons put forth, reinforced by specific examples and research, make this book hard to put down. It gets inside your head and makes you reflect often on its messages as you go about making daily business decisions. Take each quiz and you'll discover a lot about yourself and your leadership style. Follow the advice offered by the Paganos and their interviewees and you'll not only be more credible - you'll be incredible. Don't read this book just once. Keep it within arm's read on your book shelf. You'll want to refer to it often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transparency is more difficult than it sounds ..., October 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business (Hardcover)
And that's why I read this book. I understood the concept from a corporate governance/economic standpoint, but I wasn't sure what it meant for me as a leader. How can I lead in ways that are more transparent and build credibility for me and my company? The answer is written clearly in The Transparency Edge. The stories and case studies, especially, made for an interesting, informative read.
