Review

Transparency quilts are particular kinds of quilts: they effect the look of layering with translucent chiffon over cotton, the fabric-sandwich version of encyclopedia pages with overlays or scrims in scene design. With transparency quilts, the additional details and information result from careful selection and juxtaposition of color. That’s why the husband-and-wife team of Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr (Quilts Made Modern), co-founders of FunQuilts.com, spend time in the book’s first part defining and employing such color terms as “value” and “saturation.” Unfortunately, words on a page, even accompanied by Figs. 1 through 1,000, may not serve as well as personal instruction to explain why “yellow plus blue doesn’t have to equal green.” After covering how to create transparencies, Ringle and Kerr discuss how to select fabric and what doesn’t work and why. The second half of the book offers 10 patterns, including tips, skill grades, machine-quilting suggestions, and instructions for assembly. Patterns replicating tartan and madras are most effective. The couple’s writing style is practical, edged a bit with cutesy. 340 illus. --Cevin Bryerman, Publisher's Weekly, December, 2011

I am a huge fan of Ringle and Kerr's books, and this book is no exception. They take a very open approach towards to design, by which I mean that they give suggestions and ideas without being completely prescriptive in their designs. For example, they give wonderful hints for achieving transparency effects that you can use with what you have already (unlike many quilt books and patterns which make me feel like I have to go out and buy lots of stuff to achieve the desired effect). I found the directions easy to read and very clear. And they give lots of examples of different colorways and designs. Wonderful book.

I loved this book--perfect for the beginner quilter, but loved it because I am not a beginner. . . and this is why: so many quilt books nowadays have more than half taken up by instructions on how to sew, piece, etc. The nice thing about Ringer and Kerr's books is that they give just what is needed without extraneous details. I loved all the projects and enjoyed their writing, their designs, their brilliant and intriguing vision. I have another Ringle and Kerr book and love that one as well.

Do you ever see techniques and wonder how they made something? For me, I have wondered about transparency quilts for a long time, but the book, "Transparency Quilts" by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr has answered my questions, and showed me that this is an easy technique. It may sound silly, but I had wondered if I would need to purchase tulle, or something to cover small areas of the quilt. I learned the transparency technique is a matter of using value (how light or dark your fabric is) in your projects. Riggle and Kerr walk you through the process of choosing your fabrics, what works and what doesn't. Transparency Quilts also includes ten projects, using the techniques that have taught us.
I am glad that my questions have been answered by this book, and the techniques can be used both in traditional quilts and art quilts.

I thought this would be all about sheer fabrics, but it's not. When you look at these superb designs, you understand that good design appears simple using colour, shape and stitch to combine in perfect harmony. Ringle and Kerr take you through an understanding of colour and how to use it. This is all about the relationships between colours. They look at transparency and simple but effective palettes. This book will teach you to look at colour and the building of a quilt in a different way. In addition, there are 10 great projects for you to try. I really like Mint Julep, Share and Shake Alike, Whisper and Tartan. Another great book from this team. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

Bill and Weeks have done it again with another fabulous book! They have taken a difficult technique, transparency, and provided useful and easy to understand examples of what fabrics make a successful transparency and which ones do not. There are 10 beautiful quilt projects in the book. These quilts are stunning and the photography and styling is beautiful. A required addition to your quilt book library.

As with Weeks and Bill's other books - colour is the main event - and the technique using colour in Transparency Quilts is quite magical - on first glance you would think that Weeks and Bill have used a fine see-through fabric over cotton as a sandwich to create their quilts - which is what I thought when I first glanced through this book - but this is not so!

What Weeks and Bill do with these quilts is combine fabrics so cleverly that they literally appear transparent! It is quite an amazing technique and one I've not seen before.

Weeks and Bill talk about the relationship of colour to create a convincing transparency, they walk you through fabric selection and what doesn't work and why, as well as giving quite a few colour palette samples.

They then present 10 quilt projects so you can try this fabulous technique yourself - the quilts range from adventurous beginner to advanced level however there are also two beginner quilts. A few of my favourites are Mint Julep, Share and Share Alike, Whisper, and Next In Line.

As with Quilts Made Modern, Weeks and Bill give each quilt an introduction and tips on fabric selection, quilting, and colour variations, and there are also size variations.

So if you are an adventurous beginner or above - these quilts will give you a new way of thinking about and using colour that you might just love.

I love the publications from Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. The directions are fantastic, and the color instruction seems like it would be very helpful for those that want to know the "why" behind what combinations work and which ones just don't. I also appreciate the diagrams with examples of different colorways...all too often it is easy to choose a pattern (or dismiss a pattern) depending on whether the colors in the sample quilt appeal to one's personal favorites.
In terms of "Transparency Quilts" in particular - I love the play on depth and color that these quilts provide. I am happy to see a full book of this concept after the sampling provided in "Quilts Made Modern."
