Book Description

January 1, 2003
The much anticipated sequel to 'Practical CM', the CM community's favorite guide to 'Best CM Practices for the 21st Century', 'Transparent CM' captures the interactive workshop phase of Mr. Lyon's seminars and develops a standardized process for transforming your current CM activities into ‘best CM practices’ tailored specifically for your business environment. See first hand how Mr. Lyon utilizes your new ‘best CM practices’ as the basis for conducting a CM tool Requirements Analysis and generating a customized PDM System Requirements Specification. Observe the role this automated CM /PDM System Requirements Specification plays in the evaluation and selection of the most appropriate CM tool to satisfy your business’ CM process requirements. This amazing document is a first in demonstrating how to satisfy the demanding business goal of establishing truly transparent CM in organizations of all sizes. You can't afford not to read it.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book is printed with a soft plastic cover and spiral binding so that it will lay flat and stay open to the page selected. This format has been recommended by Mr. Lyon's readers who enjoy the 'desktop' nature of his reference books.

From the Author

While presenting on-site CM seminars to a wide range of businesses and government agencies, I observed the many different ways that these businesses and agencies approached the task of trying to improve their CM processes and also procure and implement automated CM tools. I was able to develop a standardized methodology during the interactive workshop phase of my seminars to establish ‘best CM practices’ tailored specifically for each individual business. We then utilized these ‘best CM practices’ as the basis for performing a CM tool requirements analysis. The data obtained from this activity was used to generate a detailed CM tool system requirements specification. This PDM system requirements specification became the framework for the evaluation and selection of the most appropriate CM tool to satisfy that particular business’ requirements. This methodology guarantees that businesses will be able to control their own unique CM processes and not become slaves to the wrong CM tool. My purpose, therefore, in writing this book is to present this unique methodology for a successful evolution from a business’ current CM practices to ‘best CM practices’, then on to the implementation of a truly automated CM system in order to reach the ultimate goal of ‘transparent CM’. The order of presentation of the subject matter in ‘Transparent CM’ is designed to facilitate this goal. In some cases, the scope and depth of coverage for a particular topic may be greater than provided in ‘Practical CM’. In other cases, it may be less. I will, as appropriate, point to topics in ‘Practical CM’ in order to provide what I feel is the correct coverage for a topic, where it is not within the scope of this book to provide that amount of detail. 'Transparent CM' is offered as an entirely new and separate book intended to provide the reader with as many of the advantages of the author's CM seminars as is possible without actually attending them.

More About the Author

Mr. Lyon attended the University of Massachusetts, MIT and the University of Hartford. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hartford. He has worked in industry (General Electric, Lockheed Martin, and United Technologies) for thirty-nine years, primarily in the fields of Project Engineering and Configuration Management (CM). He has served as the Lead Configuration and Project Engineer responsible for several large projects in the defense, space and commercial product areas. Since leaving industry, Mr. Lyon has spent the past thirteen years writing books and teaching seminars on Configuration Management throughout North America and Europe.
Mr. Lyon's Configuration Management processes have provided the basis for the implementation of Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems in several major corporations. Mr. Lyon has been responsible for facility wide training in configuration and data management systems and procedures, and has provided hands-on training for PDM/PLM users, including CCB members, design engineers, drafting, manufacturing and quality assurance personnel, field engineers, customers, CM personnel, project engineers, and program managers.
While at General Electric and Lockheed Martin, Mr. Lyon developed the four state level of control system model, a powerful methodology for integrating Configuration Management with proposal development, contract negotiation, engineering development and test, manufacturing, production, quality assurance, IT, and product support activities. His duties during his 22 years at GE and LM included Lead Configuration Management Engineer and Project/Program Engineer for the Polaris, Poseiden and Trident submarine guidance and fire control programs.
Prior to joining General Electric, Mr. Lyon was a project engineer for the United Technologies Corporation, where he was responsible for proposal development, system design and test for several large engineering development programs, including the Lunar Lander, Mars Viking Spacecraft, CH53 Helicopter, and several commercial product programs.
Mr. Lyon is the author of the outstanding new CM text, 'Practical CM III: Best Configuration Management Practices for the 21st Century', 'Transparent CM: How to Get There', the CM community's all time favorite - 'Practical CM: Best Configuration Management Practices for the 21st Century', and 'Practical Project: Guidelines for Project Engineers and Program Management Personnel'
Mr. Lyon currently provides seminars and consulting services to clients throughout North America and Europe engaged in the transition from manual CM systems to automated CM systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extends ideas from author's earlier book, June 27, 2004
This review is from: Transparent CM: How to Get There (Configuration Management) (Plastic Comb)
Mr. Lyon's earlier book, "Practical CM" (ISBN 0966124820) is the foundation of this work, which extends the approach - in the author's own words - to presenting 'unique methodology for a successful evolution from today's CM practices to best CM practices, then on to the implementation of a truly automated CM system in order to reach the ultimate goal of transparent CM.'

This book accomplishes that goal in every respect. After a chapter giving an overview of CM, the seeds of this approach are planted in the chapter titled, "Transition From Current CM Practices to Best CM Practices". A clear approach, based on the product data management approach within the CM discipline, is given. Included are a distilled list of best practices, and flow charts of the associated process. Chapters 3 and 4 cover a proposed PDM system in great depth. The requirements are outlined in sufficient detail to both gain a full understanding of the scope of the system, as well as to layout a fairly high-level system diagram if you were to build such a system in-house. Since building a system is probably not cost-effective for most organizations, Chapter 5 extends the requirements by giving advice on how to evaluate tools and vendors, and to select the best solution within constraints.

Chapters 6 and 7 describe the evolution from automated CM to transparent CM, which is the focus of the book. These are followed up with a final chapter that ties of loose ends by addressing the people dimension. Appendices A (List of Best Practices) and B CM Plan outline are invaluable, as are the documents on the accompanying CD ROM.

This is an outstanding book for advanced CM practitioners, especially those who have read and liked the author's earlier book, and/or those who are seeking to improve an existing, stable CM process.
