Editorial Reviews

Review

I am willing to predict that Transparent Minds will serve the present generation of graduate students the way Frye's Anatomy of Criticism served a preceding one. -- Marilyn Gaddis Rose, Canadian Review of Comparative Literature

A lucid, thoroughgoing analysis of the novelist's art, a study that not only reveals the grammatical and stylistic scaffolding on which character is built, but also imparts new insights into individual characters and the works in which they appear. A truly outstanding accomplishment. -- William Riggan, World Literature Today

From the Back Cover

"This is a book of international stature that cuts through to an understanding of one of the central aspects of 'modernism.' I long to hand it to my students."--David Hayman, University of Wisconsin

5.0 out of 5 stars tremendous book, June 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Transparent Minds (Paperback)
This is a thoroughly excellent study of characterization and consciousness in the novel--it's precise, thorough, clearly written, and persuasively argued. Readers looking for a discussion of neurology and consciousness won't find it here, though. The book's focus is squarely on literary form, and here Cohn excels. One of the most enlightening lit crit books I have ever come across--and especially useful for those interested in close analysis of style in modern literature.
