5.0 out of 5 stars ...instantly becomes one of your favorite big band jazz CDs, July 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Transparent Two (Audio CD)
The first track might be a fluke, the second could just be a band on a lucky roll, but by the time you've heard all fourteen tracks, you'll be in awe as I was. Simply one of the tightest bands around playing at a level of excellence I don't think I've ever heard exceeded. My favorites were "Limehouse Blues" and "On Green Dolphin Street", but that's just me. No wonder this band from the University of North Texas wins the Down Beat Magazine awards so often, and no wonder U.S. News and World Report lists UNT as the best place to get a master's degree in jazz!

Just so you know, the tracks are: (1) Give and Take, (2) Art of the Big Band, (3) The Poet, (4) Mr. Fonebone, (5) I Get Along Without You Very Well, (6) Falling in Love With Love, (7) Time for a Change, (8) Limehouse Blues, (9) What Is This Thing Called Love, (10) The Fugue, (11) Que Pasa Bossa, (12) What Was, (13) On Green Dolphin Street, (14) Battle Royal

5.0 out of 5 stars simply one of the best!, March 14, 2006
This review is from: The Transparent Two (Audio CD)
I have to agree whole-heartedly with the last reviewer, this is simply one of the best big band albums I've ever heard, and I'm an ardent jazz fan with a large collection, so that's saying a lot! ;-) As a jazz musician myself, this album never ceases to leave me in awe. I've played many of these arrangements over the years, but the UNT band just takes them to a whole new level. This album doesn't just make me *want* to get out my horn and practice, it makes me actually do it!!!
